Short on time? The essentials
- A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA (SDIRA) that holds IRS-approved physical precious metals. Silver, platinum, and palladium are also permitted alongside gold.
- Orange is in Orange County in Southeast Texas, along the Sabine River near the Texas-Louisiana border. Any U.S. resident opens a gold IRA with a national custodian. Your city does not restrict your options.
- Orange County median household income is $58,756, compared to the Texas median of $73,035. Fixed annual custodian and storage fees represent a larger share of smaller starting account balances.
- 17.2 percent of Orange residents are 65 or older, well above the Texas share of 12.9 percent. Many in this group are at or approaching required minimum distribution age under current IRS rules.
- 20.1 percent of Orange households already receive retirement income, above the Texas figure of 18.1 percent. These households are actively managing distributions and planning what passes to a spouse or heirs.
- Texas has no state personal income tax. Gold IRA distributions for Orange residents are taxed federally only, with no Texas state layer added.

Who opens a gold IRA in Orange
Orange is the county seat of Orange County in Southeast Texas, situated along the Sabine River at the Texas-Louisiana border. The U.S. Census Bureau American Community Survey 2018-2022 five-year estimates put the city’s population at 19,221. Three specific figures from that dataset identify who, in this community, is most likely weighing a gold IRA.
The median household income in Orange is $58,756. The Texas statewide median is $73,035. That $14,279 gap reflects a working-life accumulation difference. Households earning below the state median have typically had less available to contribute to 401(k) and IRA accounts over a 30-year career, which means starting balances tend to be smaller when the rollover conversation begins.
Gold IRA custodians charge fixed annual fees, typically $150 to $300 per year for custody plus separate storage fees. On a $40,000 account, $300 in annual fees is a 0.75 percent annual drag. On a $100,000 account, the same $300 is 0.3 percent. For Orange residents starting with smaller balances, fee selection carries more weight than it does in higher-income markets.
17.2 percent of Orange’s 19,221 residents are aged 65 or older, according to ACS 2018-2022 data. Using the survey population and age-share figures directly, that calculates to approximately 3,306 older residents. The Texas statewide share is 12.9 percent. Orange’s proportion of older residents is roughly 4.3 percentage points above the state average.
This matters for gold IRA purposes. Under current IRS rules (SECURE 2.0 Act, effective January 1, 2023), required minimum distributions from traditional IRAs and pre-tax rollover accounts begin at age 73. Many Orange residents aged 65 and older are within a decade of that threshold or already past it. RMD planning is a live concern, not a distant abstraction.
20.1 percent of Orange households already receive some form of retirement income, according to the same survey. The Texas statewide figure is 18.1 percent. Orange exceeds the state by 2 percentage points. Households already drawing retirement income are the group most actively thinking about how to position assets for the next decade, including what they will pass on to a spouse or the next generation.

The median age in Orange is 34.7 years. That is younger than the typical gold IRA conversion profile, since the account structure is most relevant to people within 10 to 15 years of retirement who have accumulated enough in a qualified plan to make fixed fees worthwhile.
The Orange residents driving gold IRA interest here are a subset of the total population: those in their 50s and 60s with $50,000 or more in a rollover-eligible account.
Orange retirement accounts eligible for rollover
Three categories of retirement accounts cover most Orange-area workers. Each can, under the right conditions, be rolled into a self-directed gold IRA under the same federal rules that apply anywhere in the United States. The eligibility rules are federal. Texas residency does not restrict or expand them.
Private-sector 401(k) from a former employer. Once you separate from the employer, the 401(k) is eligible for a direct rollover to an SDIRA. Funds go directly to the new IRA custodian. No federal tax applies and no 10 percent penalty applies, because the money never passes through your hands. Texas adds no state tax. For a detailed step-by-step, see our guide on Texas gold IRA rollovers.
Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS) for Orange school district employees. Public school district employees in Texas are covered by TRS. TRS is a defined-benefit pension. You do not have an individual account balance to roll over while actively employed.
If you leave TRS-covered employment before retirement, you may request a refund of your member contributions. That refund can be rolled directly into a traditional IRA or SDIRA within 60 days to avoid current federal taxation. See our dedicated guide on rolling a TRS account into a gold IRA for the process in detail. Consult a licensed tax advisor before acting on any pension refund.
General Texas pension norms for other public-sector workers. Most Texas municipalities participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS), most counties in the Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS), and most state agencies in the Employees Retirement System of Texas (ERS).
These are general Texas norms. We do not have verified data on which specific plan Orange city government or Orange County participates in. We are not asserting Orange is a TMRS member or that Orange County is a TCDRS member.
If you work for a Texas public-sector employer, contact your plan administrator or review your summary plan description to confirm your plan type and rollover options. For background, see our guides on TMRS to gold IRA, TCDRS to gold IRA, and ERS to gold IRA.
For all three account types, the gold IRA itself is governed by federal law and opened with a national custodian. Your Orange County address does not affect which custodians are available or which IRS rules apply. See our overview of what gold IRA custodians do and how to vet one before selecting a provider.
Given Orange’s higher-than-average share of residents aged 65 and older, required minimum distribution planning is particularly relevant here. The calculator below estimates RMD amounts for a traditional or rollover IRA account. For Orange residents already past age 73, this is the most immediate tax question tied to a gold IRA. Texas has no state income tax, so any RMD from a gold IRA is a federal-only taxable event.
Texas gold IRA required minimum distribution (RMD) estimator
Once required minimum distributions begin (age 73 now, 75 starting 2033), you divide last year-end balance by an IRS life-expectancy factor. Texas charges no state income tax, so the result is taxed only at the federal level. You can take a gold IRA RMD in cash or in metal.
Estimate only, not tax advice. Uses the IRS Uniform Lifetime Table (most owners). A spouse more than 10 years younger and sole beneficiary uses a different table. Roth IRAs have no lifetime RMD. Sources: IRS Publication 590-B (Table III); IRS RMD FAQs. Consult your tax advisor.

Is there a gold IRA company or dealer in Orange?
There is no gold IRA company, precious metals dealer, or SDIRA custodian based in Orange or Orange County that we have identified. This is not unusual. Gold IRA providers operate nationally. Accounts are opened online with national custodians and dealers regardless of where in Orange or Orange County you live. The entire process, from account application through metal purchase through depository delivery, takes place remotely.
Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We are not an Orange dealer, office, or custodian. We do not sell gold, open accounts, or provide financial advice. We explain how these accounts work and which national providers readers may want to evaluate.
When evaluating a gold IRA provider, the relevant questions are not geographic. They are:
- Is the custodian on the IRS list of approved nonbank trustees and custodians? Check irs.gov/retirement-plans.
- What are the full annual fees, including setup, custody, storage, and transaction fees? Request the fee schedule in writing before signing anything.
- Does the custodian work with IRS-approved depositories, including options for segregated vs. commingled storage?
- What is the dealer’s markup over spot price on the metals you plan to purchase? For common gold bullion, a markup above 5 percent warrants scrutiny.
- Does the company have a BBB accreditation? What is its rating and complaint history? Review the public record at bbb.org.
For a full breakdown of what fees to expect, see gold IRA fees explained: setup, storage, and markups. Reviewing the fee schedule before opening an account is the single most important financial step in the process.

In-state storage and Texas tax for Orange residents
IRS rules require that precious metals held in an IRA be in the physical possession of a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee. Keeping gold IRA metal at home, in a personal safe, or in a private safe deposit box constitutes a taxable distribution. The 2021 Tax Court ruling in McNulty v. Commissioner (157 T.C. No. 10) confirmed this: home delivery of IRA gold triggers a taxable distribution in the year of delivery.
Self-delivery and self-storage of IRA metal are not allowed. The custodian arranges shipment and delivery to the depository. You, as the investor, do not handle the metal at any point in the process.
The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is approximately 308 miles from Orange, about a 5.1-hour drive. The depository is state-run and state-audited, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under IRS nonbank trustee approval received in 2023. It is the only state-administered precious-metals depository in the United States.
The drive time is not relevant for storage purposes. You would never drive to Leander to deposit or retrieve IRA metal. The custodian handles all logistics. However, the depository’s Texas location may appeal to residents who prefer in-state storage under state Comptroller oversight. For details, see our guide on storing your gold IRA metal at the Texas Bullion Depository.
Other widely used depositories for gold IRAs include the Delaware Depository (Wilmington, DE), Brinks Global Services (multiple U.S. locations), CNT Depository (Bridgewater, MA), and International Depository Services (Delaware and Texas locations). Your custodian will present the options they support.
On the tax side: Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution, tightened by Proposition 4 in November 2019, requires a two-thirds supermajority of the Legislature and a statewide referendum before any income tax could be enacted.
For Orange residents, gold IRA distributions are reported on federal Form 1099-R and taxed on federal Form 1040 only. No Texas return covers personal IRA income. For a full explanation, see Texas has no state income tax: what it means for your gold IRA.
How the rollover actually works
The process is the same for an Orange resident as for any U.S. resident. You identify a rollover-eligible account, open an SDIRA with an IRS-approved custodian, request a direct rollover from the existing plan, and direct the custodian to purchase IRS-approved metals.
The dealer ships the metal to an approved depository. Done correctly, no tax is triggered at rollover time. The full step-by-step, including timing, paperwork, and common mistakes, is covered in the complete Texas gold IRA guide.
| Account type | Rollover eligible? | Key condition |
|---|---|---|
| 401(k) from a former employer | Yes (Safe) | Must be separated from that employer. Direct rollover avoids tax and penalty. |
| Traditional IRA | Yes (Safe) | Trustee-to-trustee transfer; no 60-day clock. No tax triggered on transfer. |
| 403(b), 457(b) | Yes (Safe) | Separated from employer. Same direct rollover rules as 401(k). |
| TSP (federal employees) | Yes (Safe) | Must be separated from federal service or eligible for in-service withdrawal. |
| TRS refund of contributions | Yes, if rolled within 60 days (Safe) | Must have left TRS-covered employment. Refund of your own contributions only, not the employer-funded benefit. |
| Active employer 401(k) | Usually no (Restricted) | Most plans block in-service rollovers before age 59.5. Verify your plan rules. |
| Roth IRA | Yes, into Roth SDIRA (Safe) | Roth-to-Roth transfer. Consult a tax advisor on any conversion. |

When a gold IRA is not the right move for an Orange saver
Cases where the math works against you:
Small account balance. On a $15,000 account, $300 in combined annual fees represents a 2 percent annual drag before any dealer markup. That level of fee pressure requires significant appreciation just to break even. Given Orange County’s median household income of $58,756, this threshold matters and is worth thinking through carefully before opening an account.
Short time horizon. If you need the funds within five years, the dealer markup on the buy side plus another markup on the sell side compresses the window. Gold IRAs work best as long-hold positions within a broader retirement strategy. They are not suitable for near-term liquidity needs.
Premium coins with high markups. Some dealers push proof coin sets with markups of 30 percent to 100 percent over spot price. The Texas no-income-tax advantage does not offset that kind of entry cost. Common bullion products with markups close to spot are a better starting point for most accounts.
Early withdrawal before age 59 and a half. The federal 10 percent additional tax on most early distributions applies regardless of Texas residency. On a $50,000 early withdrawal, the federal penalty alone is $5,000 before income tax. Texas saves you nothing on the federal side.
Still employed at the plan sponsor. Most active employer 401(k) plans do not permit in-service rollovers until age 59.5. You typically need to separate from the employer first. Verify your specific plan rules before beginning.
TRS members early in their careers. If you are early in a TRS career, the defined-benefit pension accrual is almost certainly more valuable left in place than rolled out as a contribution refund. Talk to a licensed financial advisor before taking a TRS refund for the purpose of funding a gold IRA.
Frequently asked questions
Are there gold IRA companies in Orange?
We have not identified any gold IRA company, custodian, or precious metals dealer based in Orange or Orange County. Gold IRA providers operate nationally. Orange residents open accounts online with custodians located anywhere in the United States. Your city of residence does not restrict which custodian or dealer you can use.
Is there a gold IRA dealer in Orange?
No precious metals dealer in Orange or Orange County has been identified that operates as a gold IRA dealer, meaning a dealer who sells metals into self-directed IRA accounts. Gold IRA metal purchases go through dealers that work with your chosen custodian. Those dealers are national. A local coin shop, if one exists in Orange, is not the same as a gold IRA dealer operating within an SDIRA structure.
How do I invest in a gold IRA near me in Orange?
The process does not require any local presence in Orange. You open a self-directed IRA with a national custodian online. The custodian executes the metal purchase with a dealer you select. The dealer ships the metal directly to an IRS-approved depository. Nothing in this process requires you to visit a physical location in or near Orange. Start by comparing custodians using our gold IRA custodian guide.
Can I store IRA gold in Orange County or at the Texas Bullion Depository?
You cannot self-store IRA gold at home or in a private facility in Orange County. IRS rules require that IRA metal be held by an approved custodian or nonbank trustee. Self-storage constitutes a taxable distribution.
The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is approximately 308 miles from Orange. It is an IRS-approved storage facility operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under nonbank trustee status received in 2023. Your custodian arranges delivery to the depository; you do not self-deliver. For details see the Texas Bullion Depository gold IRA guide.
Does Texas tax gold IRA distributions?
No. Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. A gold IRA distribution taken by an Orange resident, whether a required minimum distribution, an in-kind distribution of metal, or a Roth conversion, is taxed by the federal government only.
There is no Texas state income tax return for personal IRA income and no Texas withholding request on Form 1099-R. See Texas has no state income tax: what it means for your gold IRA for the full explanation.
Can I roll my TRS pension into a gold IRA?
If you are a public school employee in Orange covered by the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, you are in a defined-benefit pension, not an individual account. You cannot roll the pension benefit itself into a gold IRA while employed.
If you leave TRS-covered employment before retirement, you may request a refund of your own member contributions. That refund can be rolled into a traditional IRA or SDIRA within 60 days to avoid current federal tax. Our guide on rolling a TRS account into a gold IRA covers the process in detail. Consult a licensed tax advisor for your situation.
When do RMDs start on a gold IRA held by an Orange resident?
Required minimum distributions on a traditional (pre-tax) gold IRA begin at age 73, under the SECURE 2.0 Act rules effective January 1, 2023. For Orange County residents, where 17.2 percent of the population is already 65 or older, this is a practical near-term question for many savers.
RMDs can be satisfied by selling a portion of the metal and distributing cash, or by taking an in-kind distribution of the metal itself. Both methods trigger federal income tax; Texas adds no state layer. See our guide on required minimum distributions from a gold IRA for the details.
What is the minimum balance to open a gold IRA from Orange?
There is no IRS-mandated minimum for a gold IRA. In practice, custodians and dealers often set minimums in the $5,000 to $25,000 range, and some set them at $50,000 or higher. Given Orange County’s median household income of $58,756, below the Texas median of $73,035, many potential applicants may have smaller accounts. Smaller balances face more fee drag as a percentage of account value, which is worth factoring into the decision before opening an account.
