What is the Minimum for a Gold IRA in Texas?

Short on time? The essentials

  • No federal statutory minimum exists to open a gold IRA. The 2026 annual contribution ceiling of 7,500 dollars, or 8,600 dollars at age 50 or older, is a different rule and does not force a dealer minimum.
  • Texas has no state-level gold IRA minimum. The State of Texas does not license or regulate gold IRAs; the account sits under federal Internal Revenue Code section 408 rules.
  • Four dealers publish a minimum on their own site today: Augusta Precious Metals at 50,000 dollars, Noble Gold Investments at 20,000 dollars, Birch Gold Group at 5,000 dollars, and Rosland Capital at 2,500 dollars.
  • Six dealers do not publish an IRA account minimum on their own site: American Hartford Gold, Preserve Gold, Goldco, Allegiance Gold, American Bullion, and Advantage Gold. Their figure is quoted on the intake call.
  • Common self-directed IRA custodians (Equity Trust, STRATA Trust, GoldStar Trust, Kingdom Trust) do not publish a precious-metals IRA minimum on their public sites either.
  • The Texas Bullion Depository accepts IRA metal today through Lone Star Tangible Assets LP as vault operator and Equity Trust Company as the first custodian, per the state IRA storage page.
  • Most Texas gold IRAs are seeded by a rollover from a 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP, or existing IRA, which sidesteps any annual contribution ceiling and easily clears every dealer minimum on the list.
  • Under a rough 15,000 dollar starting balance, annual custodian and storage fees can consume a meaningful percentage of the account and are worth modeling before committing.

There is no federal minimum

The Internal Revenue Code does not set a dollar minimum for opening a self-directed IRA that holds physical gold. Section 408 defines what an IRA is, who qualifies to open one, and what assets are eligible. It does not require a specific starting balance. Publication 590-A, which covers IRA contributions, is silent on any minimum.

What the Internal Revenue Service does set is the annual contribution ceiling. For tax year 2026, IRS Notice 2025-67 sets the standard IRA limit at 7,500 dollars per person, or 8,600 dollars at age 50 or older with the newly indexed 1,100 dollar catch-up. That number caps how much fresh money you can add in a year. It does not force a dealer to accept your account at that size.

The distinction matters. A Texas retiree with 40,000 dollars sitting in an old 401(k) can roll the full 40,000 dollars into a gold IRA in a single transaction without touching the 7,500 dollar contribution ceiling. Rollovers and trustee-to-trustee transfers are treated as separate mechanics under Internal Revenue Code section 408(d)(3). The dealer minimum is what governs whether that 40,000 dollars gets accepted.

Texas does not set a state-level minimum

The State of Texas does not license or regulate self-directed IRAs. The Texas State Securities Board oversees precious-metals dealers under the Texas Securities Act when a dealer offers an investment contract in Texas, but the board does not set a starting balance for a gold IRA. The Comptroller of Public Accounts operates the Texas Bullion Depository under Government Code Chapter 2116 but does not require an IRA storage minimum on its state page.

What Texas does add is a distribution-side advantage. Under the Texas Constitution, Article 8, Section 24, the state cannot impose a personal income tax without voter approval. IRA distributions, Roth conversions, and required minimum distributions are federally taxed only. That advantage does not lower the minimum a dealer will accept, but it changes the math on later withdrawals for a Texas resident.

A Texan comparing minimums is comparing dealer policy and custodian policy against a personal ability to pay, not a state or federal floor. The rest of this page walks through what each side actually publishes.

Chart: publicly disclosed dealer minimums

The bar chart below shows what each of ten commonly contacted gold IRA dealers prints on its own public gold IRA page today. Four dealers print a figure; six do not. When a dealer does not publish a minimum, that number is quoted on the intake call and can vary by promotion, account type, and referral source.

Horizontal bar chart showing publicly disclosed gold IRA account minimums for ten dealers commonly used by Texas residents, checked August 2026. Four dealers publish a minimum on their own website: Augusta Precious Metals at 50,000 dollars (per augustapreciousmetals.com/gold-ira/), Noble Gold Investments at 20,000 dollars (per noblegoldinvestments.com), Birch Gold Group at 5,000 dollars (per birchgold.com), and Rosland Capital at 2,500 dollars (per roslandcapital.com). Six dealers do not publish an IRA account minimum on their own site: American Hartford Gold, Preserve Gold, Goldco, Allegiance Gold, American Bullion, and Advantage Gold. The chart shows only what each company prints on its public gold IRA page; the actual figure quoted on an intake call may differ. There is no federal statutory minimum to open a gold IRA; the annual contribution ceiling of 7,500 dollars or 8,600 dollars at age 50 or older is a separate rule.

The chart does not measure the minimum a dealer will quote on an intake call.

Two takeaways sit inside the chart. First, the four disclosed figures span roughly one order of magnitude, from 2,500 dollars to 50,000 dollars. Second, half of the shortlist prints nothing at all, meaning a Texas shopper who wants a hard number without a phone call has to pick from the disclosed group.

Two of the four disclosed minimums are on the low end of the market: Birch Gold at 5,000 dollars and Rosland Capital at 2,500 dollars. Both figures sit below the 2026 annual contribution ceiling, meaning a Texan could clear either minimum in a single year of fresh contributions once eligible. The higher two, Noble Gold at 20,000 dollars and Augusta at 50,000 dollars, effectively require a rollover for most savers.

The custodian side of the minimum

A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA. The dealer sells the metal; a separate qualified custodian holds the account and files the tax paperwork. The four custodians most commonly named on Texas paperwork are Equity Trust Company, STRATA Trust, GoldStar Trust, and Kingdom Trust. None of them publishes a precious-metals IRA opening minimum on its public site as of August 2026.

What the custodian does publish is a fee schedule, which is a separate lever from the minimum. A custodian is generally willing to open a low-balance account so long as the fees get paid on schedule. The dealer minimum is more often the binding constraint because a dealer will not sell metal below the ticket size that keeps their commission model viable.

For a Texas resident, the practical sequence is dealer first, custodian second. The dealer confirms whether your balance clears their minimum. The custodian then opens the account, receives the funds, and instructs the buy. If the dealer will not take your ticket size, the custodian relationship never gets triggered.

Does the Texas Bullion Depository set a minimum?

The Texas Bullion Depository is a state agency operating a 40,000 square foot vault in Leander, Texas, north of Austin. As of the depository's current IRA storage page, IRA metal is accepted through Lone Star Tangible Assets LP as the vault operator and Equity Trust Company as the first custodian. The state site does not print a dollar minimum for IRA storage.

What is quoted in the intake process depends on the custodian arrangement, the dealer, and the ticket size. Lone Star Tangible Assets received Internal Revenue Service nonbank trustee approval in 2023, which is the legal prerequisite to hold IRA assets. Nonbank trustee approval does not carry a minimum condition on the account owner.

A Texas resident who wants the metal stored in-state can meet whichever dealer minimum they qualify for, then instruct the custodian to route the metal to the Leander vault. The depository minimum, if any, is a Lone Star Tangible Assets and Equity Trust operational figure, not a state agency rule. Ask both parties for a written figure before you fund the account.

Rollover versus fresh contribution

Most Texas gold IRAs are funded by a rollover, not by an annual contribution. A rollover moves an existing retirement balance (401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP, or an existing IRA) into a self-directed IRA in a single transaction. The rollover is not counted against the 7,500 or 8,600 dollar 2026 contribution ceiling under Internal Revenue Code section 408(d)(3).

This mechanic is why the 50,000 dollar Augusta minimum works in practice. A Texan with 80,000 dollars in a former employer's 401(k) can clear the Augusta ticket in one rollover, even though it would take more than five years to build 50,000 dollars from fresh contributions alone. The dealer minimum is designed around rollover ticket sizes, not around annual contribution flows.

For a fresh account funded only by contributions, the low-end dealers become the practical set. A Texan under age 50 who wants to start a gold IRA with a first-year 7,500 dollar deposit clears Birch Gold and Rosland Capital immediately. The same saver does not clear Noble Gold or Augusta. Meeting either of those requires a rollover or several years of contributions. The six non-disclosing dealers have to be phoned to learn whether their intake figure fits.

How to confirm a dealer minimum yourself

Before you rely on any figure printed in a third-party article, verify the number against the dealer's own site. Third-party listicles drift out of date, and the numbers on a review blog often reflect an older promotion or a different account type. The sequence below is what an editor would do to build a fresh comparison.

  1. Load the dealer's gold IRA page. The URL is usually the dealer domain plus /gold-ira/ or /precious-metals-ira/. Bookmark the exact URL you check because the number, if present, will move over time.
  2. Search the page for "minimum" and dollar signs. Use a browser find function or a quick text search for the word minimum, the phrase account minimum, and any dollar amount. A disclosed minimum is usually printed near the fee section or in the frequently asked questions block.
  3. Open the frequently asked questions block if present. Some dealers hide the figure inside a collapsible FAQ item titled how much do I need to start or what is the minimum. Expand every panel before concluding the figure is not disclosed.
  4. Check the fee page if the gold IRA page has no figure. A minority of dealers list minimums in a separate fees or pricing page rather than on the product page. If both pages are silent, treat the figure as not publicly disclosed.
  5. Note the capture date. Print or save the page with the timestamp you captured it. That receipt matters if the dealer later disputes a figure you used to compare offers.
  6. Ask on the call and require a written quote. The intake representative will name a figure. Ask for the same figure by email, in writing, before you wire funds. That is the number you can rely on for the account you are about to open.

Check whether your old account can seed the account

If the dealer minimum figure looks large next to your fresh contribution capacity, the rollover path is how most Texas gold IRAs get funded. The eligibility check below applies the federal rollover rules to a workplace plan or existing IRA balance you already hold. The result is a starting point for a conversation with your plan administrator, not a final answer.

Can you roll your account into a gold IRA? Eligibility checker

Most retirement money can move into a gold IRA once it is an eligible rollover distribution. Pick your account and situation for a general answer. Always confirm the specifics with your plan administrator or custodian.

General guidance only, not tax or financial advice. Eligibility depends on your specific plan document and IRS rules; confirm with your plan administrator and a tax advisor. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 60-day rule and 20% withholding.

Rollover eligibility can turn on plan-specific rules that only your plan administrator can confirm. Texas public pension systems have refund and lump-sum rules that vary by plan and by separation date. That list includes TRS, ERS, TMRS, and TCDRS on the statewide side. It also includes the Houston municipal plans HPOPS, HMEPS, and HFRRF at the city level. Cross-check with the plan document and IRS Publication 590-A before you initiate.

When the minimum is a red flag, not a green light

Clearing a dealer minimum does not mean the account is a fit. Several situations argue against opening a gold IRA in Texas even when the minimum is easy to meet. No CTA sits inside this section; the goal here is to disqualify honestly.

Your intended starting balance is under 15,000 dollars. Annual custodian and storage fees for a gold IRA are usually flat dollar amounts rather than percentages. On a 5,000 or 10,000 dollar account, a combined 250 to 400 dollar annual fee stack can consume 3 to 8 percent of the balance every year. The published dealer minimum is a marketing figure, not a break-even figure.

You need liquidity within 24 months. A gold IRA is a long-horizon vehicle. Under age 59 and a half, the 10 percent federal early-withdrawal tax under Internal Revenue Code section 72(t), plus ordinary federal income tax on the distribution, can wipe out any near-term benefit. A taxable brokerage account or a high-yield savings account is a better fit for near-term dollars.

The dealer will not put the fee schedule in writing. An intake representative who names a minimum but declines to email a written fee quote before the wire is a warning sign. The published minimum tells you the ticket size the dealer wants; the written fee schedule tells you what the account will actually cost. Both figures should be in your inbox before funds move.

Your only source of funds is a Social Security check or pension income. Neither Social Security benefits nor defined-benefit pension income counts as earned taxable compensation under Internal Revenue Code section 219(f)(1). Fresh contributions require earned wages or self-employment net earnings. A rollover from an existing retirement account remains available regardless of current earned income.

You want a Texas Bullion Depository account primarily for reasons of state pride. The Leander vault is a legitimate storage option with real state oversight, but the storage cost, custodian relationship, and dealer approval matter more to your retirement outcome than the vault location. Confirm the fee schedule and custodian choice before you make the depository the deciding factor.

You are already at the annual contribution ceiling through a workplace plan and cannot roll a balance. If your 2026 contribution capacity is fully absorbed by a 401(k) elective deferral and you have no former-employer balance to roll, meeting even a low dealer minimum requires several years of separate IRA contributions. A taxable metals purchase outside an IRA may be a cleaner fit than a small, fee-heavy IRA account.

Gold IRA minimum in Texas FAQ

Is there a legal minimum to open a gold IRA in Texas?

No. The Internal Revenue Code does not set a dollar minimum to open a self-directed IRA that holds physical gold, and the State of Texas does not layer a state minimum on top. The account minimum you will face comes from the dealer and the custodian you choose, not from law.

What is the lowest publicly disclosed gold IRA minimum right now?

Among the ten dealers we checked in August 2026, Rosland Capital publishes the lowest figure at 2,500 dollars per roslandcapital.com, followed by Birch Gold Group at 5,000 dollars per birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/. The other six dealers either publish a higher figure or do not publish one at all.

Why does Augusta Precious Metals list 50,000 dollars when other dealers list 5,000 or nothing?

Augusta prints 50,000 dollars on augustapreciousmetals.com/gold-ira/ as its stated account minimum. That figure aligns with a rollover-funded customer profile rather than a fresh-contribution profile. Dealers pricing to a smaller ticket typically publish lower numbers, and dealers that quote on the call publish none. Neither approach is right or wrong on its own; they reflect different customer profiles.

Do custodians like Equity Trust or STRATA Trust set a minimum?

Neither Equity Trust Company nor STRATA Trust publishes a precious-metals IRA opening minimum on its public site, and neither do GoldStar Trust or Kingdom Trust as of August 2026. A custodian will generally open a low-balance account so long as annual fees get paid. The dealer minimum is more often the binding constraint.

Does the Texas Bullion Depository require a minimum for IRA storage?

The state site at texasbulliondepository.gov/ira-storage does not print an IRA storage minimum. IRA metal is accepted through Lone Star Tangible Assets LP as vault operator and Equity Trust Company as the first custodian, per the same state page, which was verified in August 2026. Ask both parties for a written figure before you fund an account routed to the Leander vault.

Can I open a gold IRA with just the 2026 contribution limit of 7,500 dollars?

You can, at dealers whose published minimum sits at or below 7,500 dollars. Birch Gold Group at 5,000 dollars and Rosland Capital at 2,500 dollars are both in that bracket per their own sites, verified August 2026. Non-disclosing dealers may accept the figure on the call; you have to ask.

Does a Texas rollover from a 401(k) or TRS count against the contribution ceiling?

No. Rollovers and trustee-to-trustee transfers are separate transactions from annual contributions under Internal Revenue Code section 408(d)(3). A rollover of any size can seed a gold IRA without touching the 7,500 or 8,600 dollar 2026 contribution ceiling. Plan-specific rules for TRS, ERS, TMRS, TCDRS, and Houston municipal plans vary; confirm with your plan.

Should I pick the dealer with the lowest minimum?

The minimum is only one dimension of the fit. Fee transparency, custodian choice, depository options, buyback policy, and Better Business Bureau record all matter as much or more. A dealer that publishes both a minimum and a full fee schedule tells you more useful information than a dealer that publishes neither. We are not a financial advisor; consult a licensed advisor for your specific situation.
