What PVC does to a coin
The most common and most preventable storage mistake in numismatics is a PVC flip. PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride. The soft, flexible plastic used in cheap 2x2 flips is made pliable by adding plasticizers, typically phthalate or adipate compounds, mixed into the polymer during manufacture.
Those plasticizers are not chemically bonded to the plastic. Over months and years they slowly migrate out of the flip surface. On contact with a copper, silver, or nickel coin they form a sticky film that traps moisture and reacts with the metal below.
On copper the reaction is fastest and most visible. A greenish, gummy residue appears first on the high points and then spreads into the fields. On silver the film shows as a hazy, oily bloom. On gold the coin usually survives visually but the film still leaves organic residue that grading services will note.
PVC damage is one of the main reasons the two major grading services offer conservation and restoration lines. The existence of the service tells you how routine the problem is.
The green residue is often reversible if caught early by a professional restorer. The etched pattern underneath is not. A coin left in a PVC flip for years may be cleaned of visible film and still receive a details grade due to surface disturbance the plasticizer left behind.
Test-at-home shortcut. Soft, flexible flips that feel oily to the touch are almost always PVC. Stiff, crisp, slightly rustling flips that hold their shape are usually Mylar polyester. If you cannot tell, replace the flip with a known Mylar or Air-Tite holder. The cost of the new holder is a fraction of a single coin.
The safe-material inventory
Every mainstream numismatic holder falls into a small number of inert-material categories. Understanding what each is made of, and where each fits, avoids the trap of assuming that anything transparent is safe.
Mylar flips are made of polyethylene terephthalate polyester film. Mylar is inert, contains no plasticizers, and does not release volatile compounds under normal storage conditions. The trade name Saflip is one common brand sold through numismatic supply houses. A Mylar flip is stiffer than a PVC flip and rustles slightly when handled.
Cardboard 2x2s use acid-free paperboard with two Mylar windows the coin sits between. The two halves fold, the coin is centered, and the assembly is stapled shut. Two rules on 2x2s: use archival, acid-free stock and flatten the staples fully so an adjacent 2x2 in the same box is not scratched by a raised staple point.
Coin tubes are rigid cylinders that stack a run of same-denomination coins. Quality tubes are molded from polyethylene or polypropylene, both inert. Screw-top and snap-top designs both work if the plastic is one of these two polymers. Avoid vintage clear vinyl tubes from unknown sources.
Air-Tite capsules are acrylic, injection-molded, snap-together holders sized to fit a specific coin diameter. The design isolates the coin from air movement and creates a mechanical seal that resists dust and fingerprints. Air-Tites are the standard for single-coin display and shipping of raw pieces.
Third-party grading service slabs are sonically sealed inert plastic housings from PCGS, NGC, ANACS, or ICG. The slab documents grade and authenticity on a paper insert and physically isolates the coin from the environment. A slabbed coin still requires the same room-level environmental controls as a raw coin.

Temperature, humidity, and light
Coins are chemically stable but not chemically inert. Temperature swings, elevated humidity, air pollutants, and ultraviolet light all drive slow surface change on copper, silver, and nickel alloys. Gold is far more forgiving but not immune to visible film or scratch.
The museum-grade target for coin, medal, and metals collections is a stable room between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit with relative humidity kept under 50 percent. The lower half of that humidity band (35 to 45 percent) is even better. These are the same ranges the Library of Congress and other national conservation programs publish for metal objects.
Humidity is the more urgent variable. Sustained relative humidity above about 60 percent accelerates silver tarnish and copper corrosion. Below 30 percent and the risk shifts to holder brittleness and plastic cracking, mostly a cosmetic concern.
Temperature stability matters more than the exact number. A room that runs at 72 degrees year round is safer than a room that swings between 55 and 90 with the seasons, because expansion, contraction, and dew-point crossings drive condensation on cool metal surfaces.
Light is a lesser but real factor. Direct sunlight through a window will heat the coin surface, drive local humidity, and (on the toning-sensitive silver end) accelerate visible change. Store coins away from window glass and out of any spot that receives direct afternoon sun.
A silica gel packet with color indicator is the practical humidity buffer inside a safe or a display case. The packet absorbs moisture, turns from blue to pink as it saturates, and can be dried in a low oven to reactivate. Silica gel does not replace room-level climate control. It buffers small local excursions.
Attics, basements, and garages
Three rooms in a typical home fail the environmental targets above by design. Attics run 20 or 30 degrees above outdoor temperature in a Texas summer and cross the dew point on cool nights. Basements sit at high relative humidity year round in most of the country. Garages combine both problems and add automotive exhaust residue.
Any of the three will slowly damage coins even in the correct holder. Copper spots on modern Lincoln cents, milk spots on Silver Eagles, and hazy film on Morgan dollars all trace disproportionately to storage in one of these three rooms.
The safer choice is a closet or a room inside the conditioned envelope of the house. An interior closet on the main floor typically holds within a few degrees of set point and tracks the whole-house humidity. That is close enough to the museum target for a home collection.
A dehumidifier can rescue a partially finished basement if the collection has to live there for space reasons. Sustained 40 to 45 percent relative humidity is achievable with a mid-size unit. Empty the tank on schedule and check the room hygrometer at least monthly.
Handling: edges, gloves, and breath
The oldest rule in numismatics is to hold a coin by the edge and never on the face. Skin oil, sweat salts, and small amounts of hand cream leave a residue that etches into copper and silver within days. The fingerprint often becomes visible only after a few weeks, once the acids have reacted with the surface.
Two acceptable techniques. Hold the coin between thumb and forefinger, contacting the reeded or plain edge only. Or wear soft cotton or nitrile examination gloves, without powder, and hold the coin flat between two gloved fingers. Cotton gloves reduce grip and are less forgiving of a drop. Nitrile gives better grip and is the modern choice for many collectors.
Do not breathe on the coin. Human breath carries moisture and a small amount of dissolved carbonic acid. A single close exhale on a silver coin can trigger a permanent tone shift on the exposed field. Talk over the coin from a comfortable distance or turn your head away when examining a piece up close.
Work over a soft, non-abrasive surface. A padded jeweler pad, a folded velvet cloth, or even a folded clean cotton towel absorbs the impact of a dropped coin. A bare wood table, a granite counter, or a tile floor will rim-nick or edge-dent a raw coin on first contact.
Home safe versus safe deposit box
The two mainstream storage locations for a home collection are a residential safe and a bank safe deposit box. Each has honest trade-offs that most collector press glosses over.
A quality home safe gives the collector direct control over interior climate. A silica gel or small electric dehumidifier can hold the interior at 40 to 45 percent relative humidity indefinitely. The collector has 24-hour access and no third-party log of visits. The trade-off is theft risk if the safe is discovered and defeated, and total loss risk in a house fire that exceeds the safe rating.
A bank safe deposit box removes the coins from the home. That reduces theft exposure at the residence and centralizes the collection in a hardened vault. The trade-offs are three-fold: the bank does not owe you climate control on the interior of the box, the contents are not covered by FDIC insurance, and access is limited to bank branch hours.
A separate rule of thumb applies if the metal in question is IRS-approved bullion held inside a self-directed gold IRA rather than a personal collection. Most serious collectors split. Higher-value slabbed pieces sit in the bank vault. The working reference set, the bulk tubes, and the display holders live at home in a climate-controlled safe. This split limits total-loss exposure to any single event and keeps the collector actually enjoying the collection.
Fire and moisture risks
A safe rated for fire is not the same as a safe rated for burglary, and neither rating is a promise. Fire ratings are stated in minutes at a specified interior temperature ceiling. A common 1-hour rating means the interior stays below 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 60 minutes in a test fire. That is enough to protect paper but not enough to protect the fingerprint pattern on a Choice Uncirculated coin.
Higher-grade fire safes rated to 90 or 120 minutes exist and are worth the added cost if the collection is meaningful. Interior temperature during those tests can still reach roughly 300 to 350 degrees Fahrenheit, so slabbed coins may show holder discoloration even in a passing test.
Water is the underrated risk. Firefighting response floods a home. A safe not rated water-resistant will fill with water in the aftermath of a small kitchen fire. Water in a safe drives every coin into the humidity-driven failure mode above. Look for an explicit water-resistance rating, not just a fire rating.
A separate risk category is the sprinkler-system leak or the second-floor plumbing failure. Neither of those is a fire event, but both flood the safe the same way. The safer path is to raise the safe on a small platform if the room floor can pool water at all.
Theft posture and quiet ownership
The single most effective theft prevention is not telling anyone the collection exists. Insurance underwriters, security consultants, and law enforcement all recommend the same posture: quiet ownership. The collector who does not talk about the collection loses fewer coins than the collector who does.
Do not post photos of the collection on social media without stripping metadata. Modern smartphones embed GPS coordinates in the EXIF data of every image. A collection photo posted online can carry the exact address of the safe unless the metadata was cleared or the image reprocessed through a stripping tool.
Do not describe the collection to service workers, delivery drivers, or new acquaintances at the local coin show. The line between hobby conversation and reconnaissance is not always visible from the collector side of it.
Household staff, including cleaners and dog-walkers, are the source of a small but recurring share of collection thefts. Insurance policies often carry a separate sublimit or exclusion for loss caused by a person the collector employed. That is one more reason to keep the safe location and the contents out of household conversation.
Insurance is a layer, not a replacement
Storage and insurance sit next to each other. Neither replaces the other. Good storage prevents loss and preserves grade. Insurance recovers dollar value after a loss the storage plan did not prevent.
A standard homeowners policy treats coins as personal property but caps how much it will pay per loss on the coin category. Insurance does not pay to correct gradual deterioration from bad storage. Wear and tear, humidity damage, cleaning damage, and PVC etching are almost always excluded. That means the collector who stored coins in PVC flips for a decade cannot file an insurance claim for the resulting damage. The exclusion is not negotiable at claim time.
The do-not-clean rule is a storage rule
Cleaning a coin is the fastest way to strip market value. It also connects directly to storage, because a properly stored coin does not need cleaning in the first place. The temptation to clean rises with every storage mistake and falls to zero when the storage plan is right.
Third-party grading services will note surface disturbance from cleaning on the label. A cleaned coin usually receives a details grade, which trades at a fraction of the corresponding number grade in the marketplace. That gap is often 40 to 70 percent depending on the series and the visibility of the cleaning.
Household cleaners, jewelry polishing cloths, pencil erasers, ketchup, baking soda, and toothpaste are all listed on collector forums as home remedies. Every one of them scratches the coin surface at a microscopic level. The pattern is often invisible at arm length and immediately obvious under a 10x loupe.
The narrow exception is professional conservation by a service like NCS or PCGS Restoration. These labs use trained restorers and controlled chemistry to remove PVC film, environmental grime, or organic residue without introducing new surface disturbance. What this guide is probably not
Coin storage is often marketed with promises that do not match how coins actually deteriorate. The list below sets expectations so the collector spends money on the right controls.
Not a substitute for insurance. Good storage prevents loss and preserves grade. It does not recover dollar value after a burglary or a fire. Both layers are needed on a serious collection.
Not a rescue for coins already cleaned. A polished or dipped coin cannot be restored to its original surface. Storage matters going forward but does not reverse the details grade that a cleaning already imposed.
Not a replacement for professional conservation on damaged pieces. A copper coin already showing green PVC film requires a trained restorer. A well-meaning home rinse in water or acetone can drive the residue deeper into the surface.
Not a home for IRA-owned bullion. Physical metal owned inside a self-directed IRA must sit at an IRS-qualified depository under current guidance. A home safe or a personal safe deposit box is not a permitted location for that metal.
Not a substitute for grading on a candidate rarity. A raw coin sold as a key date without third-party certification carries authenticity risk. Storage preserves the piece for the day the collector decides to submit it, but does not authenticate it.

Not a tax or legal document. Estate transfer, gift tax, and inheritance rules on a valuable collection are handled by a licensed attorney or tax professional, not by the storage box lid.

Can I use a plastic sandwich bag or a Ziploc?
No. Kitchen zip bags are usually polyethylene or a copolymer and often contain slip agents that leave a film on metal. They also trap moisture with no path out. Use Mylar flips, Air-Tite capsules, or cardboard 2x2s made for coins instead.
What about silica gel packets, do they really help?
