The Shield nickel at a glance
The Shield nickel was the first United States five-cent coin made from a copper-nickel alloy. It replaced the silver half dime for that face value and stayed in production for 18 years. All strikes came from the Philadelphia Mint.
The obverse shows a Union shield derived from the coat of arms on the Great Seal of the United States. A cross sits above the shield. Two crossed arrows appear behind it. Laurel branches wrap around the sides. The date is at the bottom.
The reverse of the original Type 1 subtype shows a large numeral 5 inside a circle of thirteen stars, with rays radiating between the stars. The Type 2 reverse, introduced in early 1867, keeps the 5 and the thirteen stars but removes the rays.
The series ended in 1883 when Charles Barber's new Liberty Head V nickel entered production. The first Liberty Head nickels were struck on January 30, 1883, and the last proof Shield nickels for collectors were struck on June 26, 1883, after which the Shield design was retired.
Design story: Longacre, Wharton, and the shield
Mint Chief Engraver James B. Longacre prepared the design under time pressure after Congress authorized the new coin on May 16, 1866. He adapted the shield motif from his earlier two-cent piece and dropped the scroll that had carried the words IN GOD WE TRUST on the older coin.
The shield design carries a specific reading. The upper part, or chief, stands for Congress. The thirteen vertical stripes stand for the original states. The crossed arrows and the laurel branches together suggest strength, readiness, and victory through unity.
Industrialist Joseph Wharton held a near-monopoly on the mining of nickel in the United States. He pushed hard for the new coin to use his metal. At the committee stage in the House of Representatives, the weight was raised from a proposed 60 grains to 77.19 grains (5.00 grams), which meant more nickel purchased from Wharton by the government.
The design was widely criticized on release. Wharton himself compared the shield to a tombstone. The American Journal of Numismatics called it the ugliest of all known coins. The reverse rays were also read by some as a reminder of the stars and bars of the recently defeated Confederate States, which the Mint addressed by removing the rays in early 1867.

The 1866 and 1867 With Rays type split
The Shield nickel series splits into two major reverse subtypes. Both are widely collected and both are separately cataloged in the standard mintage tables.
Type 1, the With Rays reverse, was struck for all of 1866 and for the early part of 1867. Rays radiate outward between each of the thirteen stars around the central numeral 5. This is the original design as authorized in 1866.
Type 2, the Without Rays reverse, entered production in early 1867 after the rays proved troublesome for the striking dies. The transition was targeted for February 1, 1867, though the Mint most likely used up remaining Type 1 dies for cost reasons. The design change created confusion, with some people mistaking one design or the other for a counterfeit.
The mintage split by subtype is instructive. The 1866 With Rays coin was struck to the amount of 14,742,500 pieces. The 1867 With Rays coin has a much lower mintage of about 2,019,000 pieces. The 1867 Without Rays coin, produced across most of the year and afterward, had a mintage of 28,890,500 pieces.
That mintage difference matters at the counter. The 1867 With Rays is the scarcer subtype for that year and trades at a real premium over the plentiful 1867 Without Rays in every grade. The 1866 With Rays is the standard first-year type coin for the series and remains widely available in circulated grades.
Why every Shield nickel is a Philadelphia coin
The Shield nickel was struck at only one facility. Every date in the series, from 1866 through 1883, came out of the Philadelphia Mint. Federal law at the time did not authorize the branch mints to strike the copper-nickel five-cent coin.
Philadelphia coins of this period do not carry a mint mark. If you find a Shield nickel with no mint mark, that is normal for the series and confirms Philadelphia production. There is no such thing as a genuine 1870-CC or 1875-S or 1880-D Shield nickel.
A Shield nickel offered for sale with a mint mark on either side is either mislabeled by the seller or physically altered. Take a coin like that as a warning sign and consult an established grading service before agreeing on a price.
Verified key dates of the series
Five Philadelphia issues carry structural scarcity from unusually low mintages. A serious buyer or a curious inheritor should check every Shield nickel for these dates before treating the coin as common. Grade and originality then drive the premium above the raw mintage figure.

Dollar values on any of these coins move with grade and with the auction market. Use current listings from an established auction house or a certified grading service population report to price a specific coin. Do not accept a verbal offer for a key date without a certified holder first.
Doubled dies, repunched dates, and the 1883/2 overdate
The Shield nickel series is a variety collector's playground. Because the copper-nickel planchet was hard on the dies, the Mint constantly cut new dies under pressure and made a great many minor errors in the process. Q. David Bowers described the 1868 nickel as a playground for repunched dates, doubled dies, and similar mistakes.
Specialists have identified more than 180 different doubled-die varieties across the series. These were caused by misalignment when the heated die was pressed against the working hub more than once to transfer the design. A doubling on the date, on the shield stripes, or on the star cluster can add real premium value on a scarcer year.
Repunched dates are also common, especially on the 1868. On some varieties, the numeral 1 is much smaller than the standard punch used elsewhere in the series. Collectors treat these as distinct catalog entries and pay premiums matched to the strength of the doubling.
The 1873 issue exists in two major subtypes, known as the Closed 3 and the Open 3. The chief coiner complained that the numeral 3 in the original Closed 3 date looked too much like an 8, so the Mint prepared new punches for the Open 3 later in the year. Both subtypes are separately collected.
The final year of the series produced an 1883/2 overdate. Five dies dated 1882 were not destroyed at the end of 1882. Instead, they were repunched with a four-digit 1883 logotype, which left a visible 2 under or near the 3 on the date. Bowers estimates a mintage of 118,975 pieces for the overdate, and specialist Howard Spindel estimates that only 0.2 to 0.3 percent of the pieces have survived to the present day.
Die cracking and how it affects value
Die cracks are one of the defining traits of the Shield nickel series. The copper-nickel planchet was harder than any coin metal the Mint had worked with in quantity before this series. Dies wore out fast and cracked often, which is why so many minor varieties exist.
Two effects follow for a modern buyer. First, a Shield nickel with heavy die cracks running across the shield, the date, or the reverse numeral trades at a discount to a clean, problem-free example of the same date and grade. Grading services still assign a numeric grade to a cracked coin, but the market pays less for it.
Second, a Shield nickel with a sharp strike, full stripe detail on the shield, and problem-free surfaces commands a real premium at every grade. Type coin collectors and registry set builders bid hardest on original coins with clean surfaces and no significant die-related noise on the design elements.
A minor die crack on a common date is not a defect that changes a shop-counter offer by much. A network of cracks on a scarce date is a real value factor and one that a certified grading service will note when assigning a grade or a details designation.
How to identify what your Shield nickel is
The steps below are the sequence a serious hobbyist runs on any Shield nickel found in a jar, a drawer, or an inherited collection. Follow them in order before treating the coin as anything more than a common date.
- Confirm the coin is a Shield nickel. The obverse shows a Union shield with a cross on top, crossed arrows behind, and laurel branches around the sides. The reverse shows a large numeral 5 inside a ring of thirteen stars. If either side shows a different design, the coin belongs to a different series.
- Weigh the coin on a jewelry scale. A genuine Shield nickel weighs 5.000 grams. A digital scale that reads to two decimal places is enough. A weight far outside 4.9 to 5.1 grams points to a fake, a heavily worn coin, or a damaged planchet.
- Check the diameter with a caliper. A Shield nickel measures roughly 20.5 mm across, which is a touch smaller than later United States nickels at 21.21 mm. A coin sold as a Shield nickel with the larger diameter deserves a second look.
- Read the date on the obverse. The date sits at the bottom of the obverse below the shield. It should read between 1866 and 1883 for a genuine Shield nickel. A date outside that window means the coin is not a Shield nickel at all.
- Check the reverse for the rays. On the 1866 and part of the 1867 issue, rays radiate outward between the thirteen stars. On the 1867 later strikes through 1883, the same reverse appears without rays. This split determines the subtype for 1867 coins in particular.
- Confirm no mint mark is present. Every genuine Shield nickel comes from Philadelphia and carries no mint mark. A Shield nickel offered with a mint mark on either side is either mislabeled by the seller or physically altered.
- Look for the key-date candidates. Check any 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, 1881, 1871, and 1867 With Rays coin closely. These issues carry the structural scarcity of the series. A candidate deserves closer inspection and possibly certification.
- Inspect the surfaces for die cracks and strike quality. Note any cracks running across the shield, the date, or the reverse numeral. Note whether the shield stripes are sharp or worn. Problem-free surfaces with sharp devices earn a premium at every grade level.
- Do not clean the coin. Any polishing, dipping, or scrubbing lowers the grade an independent grader will assign. Cleaning a coin can drop its market value by half or more. Preserve the coin exactly as found.
- Submit high-value candidates to an independent grading service. Only certified authentication from an established grader carries weight in the marketplace on a key date, a scarce mint state coin, or a suspected variety. Verbal appraisals and photo opinions do not.
Metal-floor math on a Shield nickel
Counterfeit warnings on 1877 and 1878 proofs
Key dates in any classic United States coin series attract altered-coin activity. In the Shield nickel series, the 1877 and 1878 proof-only issues sit at the top of the counterfeit-risk list, followed by any coin sold as a low-mintage 1879, 1880, or 1881.
The 1877 is the single lowest-mintage Shield nickel at 900 pieces. It exists only in proof format because no business strikes were released that year. A supposed 1877 in worn business-strike condition is almost never genuine. Common-date Shield nickels can be re-dated with tooling, and only certified authentication from an established grading service can settle the question.
The 1878 sits just above the 1877 at 2,350 pieces, again in proof-only format. The same caution applies. Any coin sold as an 1878 Shield nickel outside a certified holder deserves independent authentication before you agree on a price.
The 1879, 1880, and 1881 issues had genuine business-strike production but at very low levels. Altered-date attempts on more common years (especially 1878, 1879, 1889, and similar dates) are known. A loupe examination and a genuine reference image reveal most attempts, and certification confirms the coin either way.
Mint records themselves complicate proof authentication for this series. Numismatic historians document that Mint officials reused some dies to strike pieces for favored collectors and dealers, sometimes years after the inscribed date, which produced incongruous coins with mismatched design combinations. Certified pedigreed provenance is the working defense on any high-value Shield nickel proof.
When professional grading is worth the fee
Grading has a per-coin fee that varies by service and turnaround tier. Submitting a common circulated Shield nickel worth less than the fee is losing math. Grading is worth the cost only when the potential upside on the certified grade beats the submission fee.
Grading pays off in a small number of situations. A candidate 1877, 1878, 1879, 1880, or 1881 deserves certification regardless of grade because the date itself carries the value. A candidate 1867 With Rays deserves certification if the coin is Very Fine or better and the design elements are sharp.
A Mint State example of any date deserves grading if the surfaces are original, the shield stripes are sharp, and die cracks are minor or absent. Registry set collectors bid hardest on original coins with clean surfaces, and the market recognizes the difference clearly.
For most household finds, the honest answer is that a grading submission will cost more than the certified coin is worth. Sell circulated common dates in bulk to a local coin dealer or at a coin club show. Save grading dollars for coins with documented upside.
What your Shield nickel is probably not
Most Shield nickels that reach a shop counter or a resale listing are not what the owner is hoping for. It is more useful to know the honest patterns than to sell yourself on a possibility. The list below covers what a typical Shield nickel most often turns out to be.
A common circulated Philadelphia date worth a few dollars to about twenty dollars. This is by far the most common outcome for any date between 1866 and 1876 outside the 1867 With Rays and the 1871 semi-key. The design ran continuously in the millions per year for those dates. Value is a modest premium over face.
A well-worn coin with soft shield details. The shield stripes and the numeral 5 wore off in a predictable order because they sat on high points of the die. A coin with weak details is a lower grade regardless of date and trades at the ordinary circulated price for that year.
A heavily die-cracked example. Cracks running across the shield, the date, or the reverse numeral are a defining trait of the series. A coin with heavy cracks still grades but sells at a discount to a clean example of the same date and grade.
A cleaned or polished coin. Someone applied a chemical dip or a soft cloth to brighten the surface. Certified graders will assign a details grade instead of a numeric grade, which typically reduces value by half or more against an original piece.
A common 1867 Without Rays sold as a 1867 With Rays. The reverse subtype is the value driver on 1867 coins, and the two are frequently confused by casual sellers. Only a clear rays band between the thirteen stars on the reverse identifies the scarcer subtype.
