An off-metal strike is a coin struck on a planchet intended for a different denomination or a different alloy. The die pair is correct for the design, but the blank disk sitting under the press was the wrong one. The result is the intended design pressed onto the wrong metal, size, or thickness.

Numismatic references often use the term wrong-planchet strike for the same idea. The two terms are interchangeable in everyday collector usage. What matters is that the metal disk under the die was not the one the mint intended for that die pair.

A true off-metal is a genuine mint-made error, not damage or alteration. The design is fully formed where the planchet accepted the strike, and the coin will match one specific expected weight and composition, just not the one that goes with its design.

How an off-metal strike happens at the mint

Modern coinage at the US Mint runs on parallel production lines. Blank planchets are punched from long metal strips, tumbled clean, upset on a rim mill, and then fed by hopper into a coining press. Each press is set with a specific obverse and reverse die pair for one denomination.

A tokens or foreign coin close in size to a US denomination. Casino tokens, transit tokens, and foreign coins from many countries share sizes with US denominations.
