What New Direction Trust Company actually is
New Direction Trust Company is a self-directed IRA trustee, not a coin dealer and not a bank. It holds legal title to your retirement account assets, executes the buy and sell paperwork you sign, and files the IRS forms that keep the account tax-qualified. The corporate short name is NDTCO.
The trust operates as a Kansas-regulated non-depository trust company. That legal category lets it act as an IRA trustee under federal tax law, without accepting bank deposits from the general public. Administrative operations run out of 1070 West Century Drive, Suite 101, Louisville, CO 80027, with a satellite division in Honolulu.
New Direction custodies far more than precious metals. The account platform supports real estate, private equity, private lending, promissory notes, single-member IRA LLC structures (checkbook control), public securities through a partner brokerage, and precious metals. Metals are one line inside a broader alternative-asset custody book.
The company describes itself in its own footer language as a directed, passive custodian. That phrase carries a specific meaning. NDTCO acts on written client instructions and does not vet or endorse the underlying investment, the sponsor, or the dealer. You direct, and the trust records and holds.
The New Direction IRA to NDTCO history
The founders came to self-direction from two different professional angles. Catherine Wynne worked as an engineer while running successful real estate investments. Bill Humphrey worked as a Certified Public Accountant and wanted a tax-efficient way to hold real estate inside a retirement account. They met, compared notes, and decided existing custodian options were either closed to real estate or priced beyond reason.
The business opened its doors in 2003 under the name New Direction IRA. The early operations ran out of a home basement in Colorado. The team expanded to a Lafayette, CO office by 2006 with ten full-time staff, then acquired a franchise footprint in Hawaii in 2007 to serve the Pacific market.
Cash and assets under administration reached 300 million dollars in 2010 and one billion dollars in 2014, per the timeline published on the ndtco.com About Us page. The 2014 milestone included folding in about 1,000 accounts from a Minnesota franchisor. The Louisville, CO administrative office grew alongside that book.
In 2018 the company took the biggest legal step in its history. New Direction IRA became New Direction Trust Company after receiving a Kansas trust charter and setting up its trust operations base in Overland Park, Kansas. Since then the branding on client documents has been NDTCO, and the trustee capacity has been that Kansas charter.
The directed custodian role, in plain language
Under 26 U.S.C. section 408(a)(2), an IRA can only be held by a bank, a federally insured credit union, a state-chartered trust company, or an IRS-approved non-bank trustee. New Direction Trust Company falls into the third of those categories, chartered in Kansas.
The trustee opens the IRA in your name, receives the funds coming in from your prior 401(k), pension, or IRA, and settles each buy instruction you sign. On the metal side, the funds move from your NDTCO cash account to the dealer, and the dealer ships approved bullion to the depository named on your paperwork.
NDTCO does not choose the gold dealer for you. It does not set the coin premium. It does not underwrite the buyback price. Those are dealer decisions. If the dealer runs a fair premium, the trust piece is quiet paperwork. If the dealer runs a wide premium, the trustee still processes the buy.
This split is why the custodian question and the dealer question deserve separate scrutiny. New Direction can be the trustee on your account while the dealer paired with your paperwork still charges a high premium. Vet both sides of the pairing, not just the one you already know.
The NDTCO Fee Schedule, line by line
The Fee Schedule page on ndtco.com publishes a detailed custodian menu that separates General Fees applicable across every account from Investment-Specific Fees that vary by asset type. The Precious Metals category carries its own annual administration line and its own per-transaction processing line.
The Precious Metals annual administration line is 220 dollars per year as a flat rate. Metals held under the Online Trading tier are billed at 185 dollars per year flat instead. Purchases, sales, or exchanges of metal each carry a 130 dollar processing fee at the time of the trade. The application fee is 30 dollars, charged one time and non-refundable at account submission.
Depository storage of the physical metal is a pass-through charge. NDTCO receives the depository invoice, then bills the account holder at cost. Wire fees, transfers out, and distributions are separate line items to check in writing before signing. Confirm the current figures with the NDTCO intake team on every line.
| Fee line | Published figure | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Application fee | $30 one-time | Non-refundable fee at account submission covering identity verification and account setup. |
| Precious Metals annual administration | $220 per year flat | Recurring annual custody fee on the physical metals line, billed regardless of account value in the anniversary month. |
| Precious Metals Online Trading annual admin | $185 per year flat | Recurring annual custody fee for the online trading tier of the precious metals line. |
| Metals purchase, sale, or exchange | $130 per event | Processing fee applied on each metals trade instruction (buy, sell, or exchange), quoted per transaction. |
| Outbound wire | $35 per domestic wire | Fee for sending funds out by wire, whether for a metals purchase to the dealer or a distribution to the account holder. International wire also 35 dollars, plus any bank charges. |
| Transfer out or distribution | $150 flat per event | Flat fee on partial cash-out, full transfer to another custodian, or non-RMD distribution. Also charged as a one-time setup fee for recurring distributions. |
| Asset re-titling | $75 per asset | Charged when metal is re-titled out of NDTCO to another custodian or to the account holder as an in-kind distribution. |
| Depository storage | Pass-through from the vault | Physical storage cost, set by the depository chosen on the buy instruction and passed through by NDTCO at cost. |

Flat metals fee versus asset-based, at your balance
The chart below models the difference between the New Direction flat 220 dollars per year for the metals line and a hypothetical asset-based custodian at 0.25 percent per year. The 0.25 percent figure is a common industry midpoint for asset-based self-directed IRA pricing, used only as a reference point.

Above roughly 88,000 dollars in account value, the New Direction flat 220 dollars starts to beat the 0.25 percent alternative on the metals line alone. At 250,000 dollars the flat rate is roughly 405 dollars cheaper per year than the asset-based comparison. That gap widens as the account grows.
The comparison is only about the metals administration line. It does not include storage at the depository, dealer premium on the coin, wire fees on the buy, or the 130 dollar per-trade processing fee that NDTCO charges each time. Compare the full stack before you decide.
How New Direction Trust is regulated
New Direction Trust Company operates as a Kansas non-depository trust company. The primary supervisory authority is the Kansas Office of the State Bank Commissioner (OSBC), which regulates state-chartered banks and trust companies operating in Kansas (source: osbckansas.org, checked July 2026). Trust companies file periodic reports and undergo state examinations.
NDTCO does not file periodic reports with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, because the trust charter category is not a broker-dealer or investment adviser category. That is standard for state trust custody. Federal SEC oversight would apply only if a broker-dealer or adviser affiliate existed under the same corporate umbrella.
The federal aggregator for state financial services licensing is the Nationwide Multistate Licensing System, at nmlsconsumeraccess.org. That database indexes state license records where a company has an NMLS registration. It is a supplemental reference point, not a substitute for the Kansas OSBC banking record itself.
Consumers can also check the Better Business Bureau profile for New Direction Trust Company as an outside data point. BBB records are secondary and often lag events. The Kansas OSBC banking department stays the primary regulator on any question about trust company standing.
The gold IRA workflow at NDTCO
New Direction Trust Company positions itself as sponsor-agnostic on the metals side. The dealer of record can be Augusta Precious Metals, Birch Gold Group, Noble Gold Investments, or any other IRS-eligible gold IRA dealer that will paper a buy instruction to NDTCO. The trust reviews and processes; the dealer originates and delivers.
The saver opens the NDTCO self-directed IRA online, funds it from a prior 401(k) rollover, IRA transfer, or new contribution, and signs the metals buy instruction the dealer prepares. Cash moves from the NDTCO account to the dealer. The dealer ships approved coins and bars to the depository named on the buy sheet.
NDTCO does not restrict the depository to a single vault. Delaware Depository in Wilmington, International Depository Services in Irving TX, Brinks Global Services in multiple U.S. sites, and other IRS-eligible vaults have all shown up on NDTCO paperwork historically, depending on the dealer relationship and the storage tier elected.
The dealer runs the intake pace on that pairing. If your dealer usually paper to a specific vault, that is the default that shows up on your buy instruction, not a random pick by the trust company. Ask the dealer in writing which depository, and which storage tier, will hold your metal.
How NDTCO fits a Texas rollover
Texas has no state personal income tax on wages, capital gains, or retirement account distributions (source: Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts, checked July 2026). A Texas resident rolling into an NDTCO self-directed IRA gets a federal-only tax picture on any future distribution, without a state-tax addition on top.
The trust charter that oversees NDTCO sits in Kansas, and the administrative office sits in Colorado. Neither one is Texas. A Texas reader who specifically wants a Texas-chartered custodian would need a different trust company. New Direction is not in-state on either axis.
Residing in Texas is not required to use an out-of-state trustee. Paperwork moves through the online client portal or by mail. Your Form 5498 arrives from NDTCO each May regardless of where you live. The client experience is uniform between a Texas customer and a Colorado customer.
The larger Texas question is where the physical metal will sit. If your goal is keeping the bullion inside Texas, ask the dealer at intake whether they will route the buy to the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander. The vault operator is Lone Star Tangible Assets. Get the routing confirmation in writing before you sign.
Depository options for an NDTCO gold IRA
NDTCO can work with several IRS-eligible depositories. The one that actually shows up on your buy instruction depends on the dealer paired with your account and the storage tier you elect. Some dealer stacks default to one vault; others let you choose from a short list at intake.
| Depository | Vault location | Note for a Texas reader |
|---|---|---|
| Delaware Depository | Wilmington, Delaware | Common default for national gold IRA dealers; segregated and non-segregated tiers available; out of state for a Texas customer. |
| International Depository Services (IDS) | Irving, Texas (Dallas County) | Private commercial vault located inside Texas; not state-owned; frequently paired with self-directed custodians. |
| Brinks Global Services | Multiple U.S. sites; New York and Salt Lake City historically listed | Out of state on most dealer sheets; ask which specific Brinks vault the buy instruction names. |
| A-M Global Logistics (AMGL) | Las Vegas, Nevada | Out of state; sometimes the default when segregated storage is elected on certain dealer stacks. |
| Texas Bullion Depository (TxBD) | Leander, Texas (Williamson County) | State-owned; the texasbulliondepository.gov IRA Storage page names Equity Trust as the first custodian working with the vault; NDTCO routing is not a documented default and must be confirmed on the buy instruction. |
Source: ndtco.com Precious Metals page and Fee Schedule. Also texasbulliondepository.gov IRA Storage page. That page names Lone Star Tangible Assets LP as the IRS non-bank trustee operator of the vault, and Equity Trust Company as the first custodian to work with the Depository. Checked July 2026. Confirm the exact depository for your account before signing any buy instruction.
Storage segregation is a separate decision inside the depository question. Segregated storage means your specific bars sit on your named shelf, and you receive back the exact bars you shipped in. Non-segregated storage means you own a claim to like-kind metal from a pooled inventory. Both are legal; segregated costs more.
Opening an NDTCO gold IRA, step by step
Most savers do not open an NDTCO gold IRA by phoning the trust company cold. The paperwork opens as part of a dealer intake, where the dealer packages the NDTCO account application with the buy instruction and the depository election form. The steps below cover the practical order of operations for a Texas reader.
- Pick the gold dealer first, then confirm NDTCO routing. Ask the dealer whether they paper to New Direction Trust Company as a supported custodian. Not every dealer partners with every trustee, and the dealer runs the intake pace.
- Request the current fee schedule in writing. Ask NDTCO for a current PDF fee schedule that applies to your account. Compare the 30 dollar application fee, the 220 dollar annual metals administration line, the 130 dollar processing fee, the 35 dollar wire fee, and the 150 dollar transfer-out fee.
- Open the self-directed IRA at NDTCO. Complete the online application with your identification, employment status, beneficiary designations, and the funding source (rollover, transfer, or new contribution).
- Request a trustee-to-trustee transfer from your prior custodian. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 20 percent mandatory federal withholding and the 60-day redeposit clock under IRS Publication 590-A. Do not take the check in your own name.
- Name the depository on the buy instruction. Follow the dealer intake path and confirm on paper which vault, and which storage tier, will hold your metal. A Texas Bullion Depository election needs to be requested at this step, not later.
- Sign the buy instruction after the cash lands at NDTCO. Wait until the cash actually reaches the NDTCO account before you sign the metal order. Signing before funding creates a settlement mismatch that the trust and the dealer both have to unwind.
- Save every Form 5498 and Form 1099-R. NDTCO files Form 5498 each May reporting the fair market value and any contributions, and Form 1099-R when a distribution occurs. Keep both for your tax file and reconcile them against your own Form 1040.
Worked example: fee drag on a Texas gold IRA
Worked example
Consider a Dallas resident, age 58, rolling 175,000 dollars from a 401(k) into a new NDTCO gold IRA in 2026. The known custodian fees at year one are 30 dollars for the application, 220 dollars for the metals annual administration, 130 dollars for one buy instruction, and 35 dollars for one outbound wire. That is 415 dollars at year one.
Assume a placeholder Delaware Depository storage fee of 180 dollars per year for segregated storage. Combined with the 220 dollar annual metals administration line in years two and beyond, that is 400 dollars per year on custody and storage. On a 175,000 dollar balance, that is roughly 0.23 percent per year on custody and storage, before dealer premium.
The Texas tax picture on a future distribution is federal only. The state adds nothing on top, because Texas has no personal income tax. That does not remove the 10 percent additional tax under IRC 72(t) if the reader takes a distribution before age 59.5.
Use the calculator below to model your own numbers. Replace the placeholder storage figure with what the dealer quotes you in writing for the vault you elect. Add a realistic dealer premium and any wire charges across the years you plan to hold the account.
Texas gold IRA fee-drag calculator
Texas gold IRAs charge mostly flat dollar fees (setup, annual custodian, storage). Flat fees take a much bigger bite out of a small account than a large one. Enter your numbers to see the drag.
Estimate only. Fee amounts vary by provider and are often not published; enter figures you confirm in writing. This tool ignores metal price changes and the dealer spread, which also affect returns. Not financial advice.

Balanced pros and cons
What New Direction Trust does well
- Chartered as a Kansas non-depository trust company, with two decades of self-directed operating history dating back to 2003.
- Published Fee Schedule breaks the menu out clearly by asset type, so the metals line (220 dollars per year flat, or 185 dollars on the online trading tier) is easy to isolate.
- Sponsor-agnostic on the dealer side: the metals buy instruction can name Augusta, Birch, Noble, or another dealer of your choice.
- Broader alternative-asset menu than a metals-only custodian, useful if you plan to add real estate or private lending in the same IRA later.
- Long tenure on the Colorado administrative side; the Louisville office ran the operation before the Kansas charter and continues to today.
Where readers should push harder
- Charter sits in Kansas, not in Texas, so an in-state trustee preference will not be met by NDTCO.
- Per-transaction 130 dollar processing fee stacks on top of the flat 220 dollar per year metals line and can add up on an active trading pattern.
- Storage at the depository, dealer premium, and outbound wires are quoted separately and are easy to underestimate at intake.
- NDTCO is not named on the current Texas Bullion Depository IRA Storage page as one of the working custodians, so a TxBD routing depends entirely on the dealer relationship.
- Transfers out and non-RMD distributions carry a flat 150 dollar processing charge, plus a 75 dollar re-titling fee per asset and 35 dollar wire fees where applicable.
When New Direction is a bad idea for you
Situations where an NDTCO self-directed gold IRA does not match your goal or your balance.
If your rollover balance is small, the fixed setup and per-transaction fees can create a fee drag percentage that eats the case for a gold IRA at all. On a 15,000 dollar balance, 220 dollars per year alone is 1.47 percent per year in custody, before any storage or dealer premium is added on top.
If you specifically want a Texas-chartered trustee holding your metal inside Texas at a state-owned vault, New Direction is not the built-in match. Its charter is Kansas, and its default operational base is Colorado. Getting metal to the Texas Bullion Depository depends on the dealer paperwork, not on NDTCO.
If you expect to need the cash inside three to five years, the buy-sell spread on physical metal is a real cost that a basic ETF or bond IRA does not carry. Selling coins back to a dealer is a spread transaction, not a click. Model the round trip before opening the account.
If you are under 59.5 and considering an early distribution rather than a rollover, the 10 percent additional tax under IRC 72(t) still applies, plus ordinary federal income tax on the distributed amount. Nobody can predict metal prices, so early liquidation on a bad tick is a real risk. Consult your tax advisor.
