Short on time? The essentials
- A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA holding IRS-approved physical precious metals instead of stocks or bonds. Silver, platinum, and palladium are also permitted alongside gold.
- Montgomery County includes Conroe (the county seat) and The Woodlands. Any U.S. resident can open a gold IRA with any IRS-approved custodian, regardless of county or city of residence.
- Texas has no state personal income tax. Gold IRA distributions for Montgomery County residents face federal tax only, with zero state income tax at the Texas level.
- Common rollover sources: 401(k) from a former employer, traditional IRA, Roth IRA, 403(b), 457(b), TSP, and pension lump-sum refunds of your own contributions after separation. County employees holding TCDRS accounts and city employees holding TMRS accounts should verify rollover eligibility directly with their plan.
- Metal must be held at an IRS-approved depository, not at home. A Texas option is the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under IRS nonbank trustee approval, about 180 miles from Conroe.
- Annual costs stack together: setup fee plus custodian fee plus storage fee plus dealer markup at purchase. On a $100,000 account, $400 in combined annual fees represents a 0.4 percent annual drag before markups.
- Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We have no store or office in Montgomery County, Conroe, The Woodlands, or anywhere in Texas.

What a gold IRA means for Montgomery County residents
A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical precious metals instead of stocks or bonds. The IRS calls this structure a self-directed IRA, or SDIRA. It operates under the same contribution limits, distribution rules, and tax treatment as any other IRA. The key difference is the asset inside: physical metal rather than paper securities.
A self-directed IRA requires a qualified IRS-approved custodian. The custodian holds the account, processes the metal purchase through a dealer you select, and arranges delivery to an approved depository. No physical metal comes to your home during this process. Taking physical possession before age 59 1/2 without a qualifying exception constitutes a distribution and triggers federal tax plus the 10 percent early-withdrawal penalty.
Montgomery County lies north of Harris County, stretching from the Greater Houston area toward the Sam Houston National Forest. The county seat is Conroe. The Woodlands, a major master-planned community, sits largely inside Montgomery County’s southern portion. Both county and city government employees in Conroe and other Montgomery County municipalities may hold accounts through TCDRS or TMRS that could be rollover-eligible after separation.
Location does not limit which gold IRA custodian or dealer you can use. A Montgomery County resident accesses the same national pool of IRS-approved custodians, dealers, and depositories as any other U.S. resident. What Texas residency does affect is the state income tax treatment of distributions you eventually take from the account.
Texas advantages for Montgomery County gold IRA holders
Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution, reinforced by Proposition 4 approved in November 2019, requires a two-thirds supermajority in the Legislature plus a statewide referendum before any personal income tax could be enacted. That constitutional protection makes the zero rate unusually durable.
For a Montgomery County resident, the result is a shorter tax calculation at distribution time. A required minimum distribution, an early withdrawal, or a Roth conversion from a gold IRA is reported on federal Form 1099-R and taxed on federal Form 1040. No Texas state return captures that income. No state income tax applies to it.
The contrast with high-income-tax states is direct. California’s top state income tax rate reaches 13.3 percent for high earners (FTB Tax Year 2025). Illinois applies a flat 4.95 percent to all ordinary income regardless of amount (IDOR Tax Year 2025). A Montgomery County retiree taking a $100,000 annual distribution owes $0 in Texas state income tax on that amount. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation, as individual tax outcomes vary.

The second Texas advantage is the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, approximately 180 miles from Conroe. It is the only state-administered and state-audited precious-metals depository in the United States. Governor Greg Abbott signed the legislation establishing it on June 12, 2015. Lone Star Tangible Assets (LSTA) has operated the facility since 2017 under a vendor contract with the Texas Comptroller’s office.
LSTA received IRS nonbank trustee approval in 2023, which permits IRA-titled precious metals to be held at the Leander facility. Equity Trust Company was the first custodian publicly coordinating IRA storage at the depository, per the depository’s IRA storage information as of July 2026. Verify current custodian relationships and fee schedules at texasbulliondepository.gov before committing to this storage option.
Which metals belong in a gold IRA
IRC Section 408(m) defines which metals belong in a self-directed IRA. Congress carved out an exception to the general prohibition on collectibles for bullion and coins meeting minimum fineness standards. The informal term “gold IRA” covers all four IRS-approved precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.
| Metal | Minimum fineness | IRA-eligible examples | Common exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | .995 (99.5%) | American Gold Buffalo (.9999), Canadian Gold Maple Leaf (.9999), gold bars from NYMEX/COMEX-approved refiners | South African Krugerrand (.9167, no statutory exception), numismatic and graded coins |
| Gold (statutory exception) | .9167 (22-karat) | American Gold Eagle (bullion and proof), named in IRC 408(m)(3)(A) by Congress regardless of fineness | No other 22-karat gold coin shares this exception |
| Silver | .999 (99.9%) | American Silver Eagle (statutory exception), Canadian Silver Maple Leaf (.9999), silver bars from approved refiners | Pre-1965 "junk" silver coins (no fineness guarantee) |
| Platinum | .9995 (99.95%) | American Platinum Eagle, Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, platinum bars from approved refiners | Platinum coins below .9995 fineness |
| Palladium | .9995 (99.95%) | American Palladium Eagle, Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf, palladium bars from approved refiners | Palladium coins below .9995 fineness |

The American Gold Eagle is the most important exception to understand. Its gold content is .9167 (22-karat), below the .995 fineness floor set by IRC Section 408(m). Congress named the Eagle explicitly in IRC Section 408(m)(3)(A) in 1997, making it IRA-eligible by statute. The South African Krugerrand is also .9167, but Congress extended no equivalent exception to it, so the Krugerrand is not IRA-eligible.
Numismatic or graded coins purchased for collector value are not eligible for an IRA. The IRS position is that IRA metal value should derive primarily from metal content, not from rarity or collector demand. High-premium proof sets are a compliance area worth reviewing with your custodian before any purchase.
How to open a gold IRA from Montgomery County
Opening a gold IRA from Montgomery County follows the same process as from any other U.S. location. The five steps below apply whether you live in Conroe, The Woodlands, or elsewhere in the county.
- Confirm your funding source. Identify the account to use: a 401(k) from a former employer, an existing traditional or Roth IRA, a 403(b), 457(b), or TSP. Montgomery County government employees holding TCDRS accounts, and city employees holding TMRS accounts, should verify rollover eligibility directly with their specific plan. A current employer’s plan generally cannot be rolled until you separate from service.
- Choose an IRS-approved self-directed IRA custodian. Custodians that specialize in precious metals include Equity Trust Company, STRATA Trust Company, GoldStar Trust Company, and Madison Trust. Equity Trust was the first custodian publicly coordinating IRA storage at the Texas Bullion Depository. Compare annual fees, account minimums, and depository relationships before deciding.
- Open the SDIRA and initiate the rollover or transfer. Complete the custodian’s account application. For a 401(k), request a direct rollover: the plan sends funds directly to the custodian, generating Code G on Form 1099-R with no withholding and no penalty. For an IRA, request a trustee-to-trustee transfer. Both methods avoid the 60-day clock and the 20 percent mandatory withholding that apply to indirect rollovers.
- Select IRS-approved precious metals with a dealer. Direct the custodian to purchase eligible metals meeting the IRC Section 408(m) fineness standards. Get written confirmation of product, fineness, weight, and all-in price before authorizing the purchase. Common bullion coins and bars typically carry 1 to 5 percent over spot; premium proof sets can carry much higher markups.
- Arrange delivery to an IRS-approved depository. The dealer ships the metal directly to the depository under your SDIRA account name. Options for Montgomery County residents include the Delaware Depository, Brinks Global Services, CNT Depository, and the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander. Metal cannot pass through your hands without triggering a taxable distribution.
Check your rollover eligibility
The most common path to fund a new gold IRA is a rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer from an existing qualified account. Texas has no state income tax, so a properly executed direct rollover from a 401(k) or IRA generates zero federal tax and zero Texas state tax. Use the eligibility tool below to check your account type and estimate the rollover outcome.
Can you roll your account into a gold IRA? Eligibility checker
Most retirement money can move into a gold IRA once it is an eligible rollover distribution. Pick your account and situation for a general answer. Always confirm the specifics with your plan administrator or custodian.
General guidance only, not tax or financial advice. Eligibility depends on your specific plan document and IRS rules; confirm with your plan administrator and a tax advisor. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 60-day rule and 20% withholding.

If your account is with TCDRS or TMRS, verify rollover eligibility directly with your plan before using any estimator. Defined-benefit plans have rules that differ from 401(k) or traditional IRA accounts. Consult your tax advisor for guidance on your specific situation.
Fees to plan for
Gold IRA costs come in layers. Each layer goes to a different party: the custodian, the depository, and the dealer. Setup fees, annual custodian fees, annual storage fees, and dealer markups at purchase all add up before any return is earned. The calculator below lets you model the long-term cost of those fees on a given balance.
Texas gold IRA fee-drag calculator
Texas gold IRAs charge mostly flat dollar fees (setup, annual custodian, storage). Flat fees take a much bigger bite out of a small account than a large one. Enter your numbers to see the drag.
Estimate only. Fee amounts vary by provider and are often not published; enter figures you confirm in writing. This tool ignores metal price changes and the dealer spread, which also affect returns. Not financial advice.

One distinction matters here: the dealer markup is a one-time cost at purchase, while custodian and storage fees recur every year. The markup does not appear as a separate line item on your custodian statement. Asking for a written quote of product, fineness, weight, and all-in cost before any purchase confirmation is the clearest protection against markup abuse.
Storage fees vary by depository and by whether you choose segregated (your metal in its own vault section) or commingled (pooled with other clients’ metal) storage. Segregated storage costs more per year but gives you title to specific coins or bars. Commingled is less expensive but allocates a fungible share. Discuss both options with your custodian before the first purchase.

When a gold IRA is not the right move
A gold IRA is not the right choice for every retirement account holder. Several situations make the costs and restrictions more burden than benefit.
- Account balance under $50,000. Combined annual fees of $300 to $500 represent 0.6 to 1 percent of the account each year on a $50,000 balance. That cost drag is meaningful over a 20-year retirement horizon, especially when the account is too small to absorb it.
- Need liquidity within three to five years. Gold IRA metal must be sold before you can access cash. Liquidating metal through the custodian and dealer takes time and incurs a selling spread. If you expect to draw from this account soon, a liquid asset class is a better fit.
- Attracted primarily by numismatic or proof coin pitches. If a dealer is steering you toward high-premium collectible coins rather than standard bullion, that is a warning sign. The IRS prohibits collectibles inside an IRA unless they meet the IRC Section 408(m)(3) fineness and packaging standards. Numismatic value is not a qualifying factor.
- Misled by home-storage claims. The IRS prohibits holding IRA-titled metal at your home or in a personal safe. The Tax Court addressed home-storage arrangements in McNulty v. Commissioner (T.C. Memo 2021). Storing IRA metal at home triggers an automatic distribution and full federal income tax on the amount. Texas adds no state tax, but the federal consequences are significant.
- Planning to rely on this account for early-retirement income. Distributions before age 59 1/2 trigger ordinary federal income tax plus a 10 percent federal penalty unless a qualifying exception applies. Common exceptions include disability, unreimbursed medical costs above threshold, and substantially equal periodic payments under IRC Section 72(t). Verify exceptions with your tax advisor before acting.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open a gold IRA from Montgomery County, Texas?
Yes. A Montgomery County resident can open a gold IRA with any IRS-approved self-directed IRA custodian in the country. The process is entirely remote: application, funding, metal purchase, and depository storage are all handled without visiting a local office. Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority with no physical office in Montgomery County or Conroe.
Does Texas tax gold IRA distributions?
No. Texas has no state personal income tax. Gold IRA distributions, including required minimum distributions, early withdrawals, and Roth conversions, are taxed at the federal level only. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
What is the Texas Bullion Depository and can my IRA metal be stored there?
The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is the only state-administered precious-metals depository in the United States. Lone Star Tangible Assets operates it under IRS nonbank trustee approval granted in 2023, allowing IRA-titled metal to be held there. Equity Trust Company was the first custodian publicly coordinating IRA storage at the facility as of July 2026. Verify current custodian relationships and fees at texasbulliondepository.gov.
Which metals qualify for a gold IRA under IRS rules?
IRC Section 408(m) requires: gold at .995 minimum fineness, silver at .999, platinum and palladium at .9995. The American Gold Eagle is a statutory exception at .9167 (22-karat), named explicitly in IRC Section 408(m)(3)(A) in 1997. Bars must come from NYMEX/COMEX-approved, LBMA-approved, or national-mint-accredited refiners.
Can I roll a TCDRS or TMRS pension account into a gold IRA?
TCDRS and TMRS are defined-benefit plans; active monthly annuity payments cannot be rolled into any IRA. A lump-sum refund of your own contributions after separation may be rollover-eligible under each plan’s specific rules. Verify your options directly with TCDRS (tcdrs.org) or TMRS (tmrs.com) before taking any action. Plans differ and rules can change.
What is the minimum investment needed to open a gold IRA?
The IRS sets no minimum account size for a gold IRA. In practice, most gold IRA providers set minimums of $50,000 or more because the annual custodian and storage fee structure becomes disproportionate on smaller balances. On a $20,000 account, $400 in annual fees equals a 2 percent annual cost before markups.
What happens if I take physical possession of my gold IRA metal?
Taking physical possession of IRA-titled metal before a valid distribution is treated as a taxable distribution by the IRS. A distribution before age 59 1/2 triggers ordinary federal income tax plus a 10 percent federal penalty. The Tax Court addressed home-storage arrangements in McNulty v. Commissioner (T.C. Memo 2021), ruling that owner possession equals distribution. Consult a tax advisor before taking any distribution.
Are proof gold coins eligible for a gold IRA?
Yes, if held in original mint packaging with a certificate of authenticity, per IRC Section 408(m)(3). American Gold Eagle Proof and American Silver Eagle Proof coins are the most commonly used examples. All other proof coin eligibility depends on whether the underlying metal meets the fineness standard (.995 for gold, .999 for silver). Verify with your custodian before any proof coin purchase.
