Short on time? The essentials

  • A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA holding IRS-approved physical precious metals instead of stocks or bonds. Silver, platinum, and palladium are also permitted alongside gold under the same account structure.
  • Hidalgo County is in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas, anchored by McAllen and the county seat of Edinburg. Workers in healthcare, education, and cross-border trade have accumulated substantial retirement balances that may be eligible for rollover into a gold IRA.
  • Texas has no state personal income tax. Hidalgo County residents pay federal tax only on gold IRA distributions, with no Texas state layer added on top. That advantage applies equally to required minimum distributions, in-kind distributions, and Roth conversions.
  • Eligible funding sources include a 401(k) from a former employer, traditional IRA, Roth IRA, 403(b), 457(b), TSP, and eligible lump-sum refunds from state pension systems. Annual new contributions for 2026 are capped at $7,500 ($8,600 for age 50 or older).
  • Metal must be held at an IRS-approved depository, not at home. A Texas option is the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under IRS nonbank trustee approval granted in 2023.
  • Annual costs layer together: custodian fee plus storage fee plus dealer markup at purchase. On a $100,000 account, $400 in combined annual fees represents a 0.4 percent drag before markups.
  • Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We do not have a store, office, or physical presence in Hidalgo County or anywhere in Texas.

What a gold IRA means for Hidalgo County residents

A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical precious metals. The IRS designates this structure as a self-directed IRA, or SDIRA. It operates under the same contribution limits, distribution rules, and tax treatment as any other IRA. The core difference is the asset inside: physical metal rather than paper securities.

The custodian of an SDIRA is not a regular brokerage. It must be an IRS-approved nonbank trustee or a bank acting as trustee under IRS guidelines. The custodian holds the account, processes the metal purchase through a dealer you select, and arranges delivery to an approved depository. Metal never comes to your home without triggering a taxable distribution.

Hidalgo County sits in the Rio Grande Valley of South Texas. McAllen, the county’s largest city, is a major international trade hub on the US-Mexico border, directly across from Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The county’s large healthcare sector, anchored by regional hospital systems and the UT Rio Grande Valley School of Medicine in Edinburg, means many workers have accumulated 403(b) and 457(b) balances over long careers.

Location does not restrict which gold IRA you can open. A Hidalgo County resident uses the same national pool of IRS-approved custodians, dealers, and depositories as any other U.S. resident. Texas residency affects only the state tax treatment of any distribution you eventually take from the account.

Texas advantages for Hidalgo County gold IRA holders

Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution, reinforced by Proposition 4 in November 2019, requires a two-thirds supermajority of the Legislature plus a statewide referendum before any state personal income tax could be enacted. That structural protection is among the strongest of any state.

For a Hidalgo County resident, the result is a shorter tax stack at distribution time. A required minimum distribution, an early withdrawal, or a Roth conversion from a gold IRA is reported on federal Form 1099-R and taxed on federal Form 1040. No Texas state return captures personal IRA income. No Texas state withholding appears on Form 1099-R.

The gap against high-tax states is real. A California retiree taking a large IRA distribution can owe up to 13.3 percent in California state income tax on top of federal tax. A Hidalgo County retiree taking the same distribution owes $0 to Texas. Over two or more decades of retirement, that difference compounds into a meaningful increase in after-tax income available for heirs or personal spending.

The second Texas advantage is the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, approximately 280 miles north of McAllen. It is the only state-administered and state-audited precious-metals depository in the United States. Lone Star Tangible Assets operates the depository under IRS nonbank trustee approval granted in 2023, which allows IRA-titled metal to be stored at the facility.

Equity Trust Company is currently the first custodian publicly coordinating with the depository for IRA assets, per the depository’s IRA storage page. Verify current custodian relationships and fee schedules directly at texasbulliondepository.gov before committing to this storage option.

Which metals go in a gold IRA

IRC Section 408(m) sets the eligibility floor. Collectibles are generally prohibited inside an IRA, but Congress carved out an exception for bullion and coins meeting minimum fineness standards. The informal term “gold IRA” covers all four IRS-approved precious metals: gold, silver, platinum, and palladium.

IRA-eligible precious metals: fineness floors and key examples
MetalMinimum finenessIRA-eligible examplesCommon exclusions
Gold.995 (99.5%)American Gold Buffalo (.9999), Canadian Gold Maple Leaf (.9999), gold bars from NYMEX/COMEX-approved refinersSouth African Krugerrand (.9167, no statutory exception), most numismatic and graded coins
Gold (statutory exception).9167 (22-karat)American Gold Eagle (bullion and proof), named in IRC 408(m)(3)(A) by statute regardless of finenessNo other 22-karat gold coin shares this exception
Silver.999 (99.9%)American Silver Eagle (statutory exception), Canadian Silver Maple Leaf (.9999), silver bars from approved refinersPre-1965 “junk” silver coins (no guaranteed fineness)
Platinum.9995 (99.95%)American Platinum Eagle, Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf, platinum bars from approved refinersPlatinum coins below .9995 fineness
Palladium.9995 (99.95%)American Palladium Eagle, Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf, palladium bars from approved refinersPalladium coins below .9995 fineness

Source: IRC Section 408(m)(3). Bars must be produced by a NYMEX/COMEX-approved, LBMA-approved, or national-mint-accredited refiner. Proof coins are eligible if held in original mint packaging with a certificate of authenticity. Checked June 2026.

The American Gold Eagle deserves a specific note. Its gold content is .9167 (22-karat), below the .995 floor for gold. Congress named it explicitly in IRC Section 408(m)(3)(A) in 1997, making it IRA-eligible by statute. The South African Krugerrand is also .9167, but Congress did not extend that exception to it. The Krugerrand is not IRA-eligible.

Numismatic or graded coins purchased for their collector premium are not eligible. The IRS has not issued a bright-line rule on what markup level crosses into “collectible” territory. The practical standard is that the value of IRA metal should derive primarily from metal content, not from rarity or collector demand. High-premium proof coin sets are a compliance area worth discussing with your custodian before any purchase.

How to open a gold IRA from Hidalgo County

The process follows the same five-step sequence for any U.S. resident. Hidalgo County and Rio Grande Valley context is noted where it applies.

  1. Confirm your funding source. Identify the account you plan to use: 401(k) from a former employer, existing traditional or Roth IRA, 403(b), 457(b), or TSP. Hidalgo County workers in healthcare and education often carry 403(b) plans through hospital systems or UTRGV. State employees may have ERS accounts; public school teachers, counselors, and administrators carry TRS accounts. Each plan type has its own rollover rules. A current employer’s plan generally cannot be rolled until you separate, unless the plan allows in-service withdrawals after age 59 and a half. TRS members should confirm whether a refund of their own contributions is available and rollover-eligible under their specific plan tier before proceeding.
  2. Choose an IRS-approved self-directed IRA custodian. Custodians specializing in precious metals include Equity Trust Company, STRATA Trust Company, GoldStar Trust Company, and Madison Trust. Compare annual fees, account minimums, and depository relationships. Equity Trust is currently the first custodian to coordinate publicly with the Texas Bullion Depository for IRA storage.
  3. Open the SDIRA and initiate the rollover or transfer. Complete the custodian’s account application. For a rollover from a 403(b) or 401(k), request a direct rollover: the plan sends funds directly to the custodian (Code G on Form 1099-R, no federal tax, no 10 percent penalty). For a trustee-to-trustee IRA transfer, the sending custodian moves funds directly. Both methods avoid the 60-day clock and 20 percent mandatory withholding that apply to indirect rollovers.
  4. Select IRS-approved precious metals with a dealer. The custodian executes the purchase based on your instructions. Confirm the metal meets the fineness standards in the table above. Get written confirmation of the exact product, fineness, and price before funds move. Common bullion coins and bars typically carry a 1 to 5 percent markup over spot; premium proof sets can carry markups far higher.
  5. Arrange delivery to an IRS-approved depository. The dealer ships the metal directly to the depository under your SDIRA account. Options for Hidalgo County residents include the Delaware Depository, Brinks Global Services, CNT Depository, International Depository Services (IDS, with a Texas facility), and the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander. Metal cannot pass through your hands without triggering a taxable distribution.

Check your rollover eligibility

The most common path to fund a new gold IRA is a rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer from an existing qualified account. The calculator below helps you check whether your account type is eligible and estimate what a direct rollover looks like.

Texas has no state income tax. Your federal tax estimate on a properly executed direct rollover is also your total tax estimate: $0 in tax when done as a direct transfer.

Can you roll your account into a gold IRA? Eligibility checker

Most retirement money can move into a gold IRA once it is an eligible rollover distribution. Pick your account and situation for a general answer. Always confirm the specifics with your plan administrator or custodian.

General guidance only, not tax or financial advice. Eligibility depends on your specific plan document and IRS rules; confirm with your plan administrator and a tax advisor. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 60-day rule and 20% withholding.

Fees to budget for

Gold IRA costs run in layers. Each layer is paid to a different party: the custodian, the depository, and the dealer. None of these appear on your account statement the way mutual fund expense ratios do. Understanding each cost before you open an account is the single most important financial step in the process.

Typical gold IRA fee layers and what they cover
Fee typeWho charges itWhat it coversTypical range
Account setup feeCustodianOpening the SDIRA and processing the initial rollover or transfer paperwork$0 to $300 (one-time)
Annual custodian feeCustodianAccount administration, record-keeping, IRS reporting (Form 5498, Form 1099-R), and transaction processing$75 to $300 per year
Storage feeDepositorySecure vault storage, insurance, and audits. Segregated storage costs more than commingled.$100 to $300 per year or 0.1% to 0.3% of account value per year
Dealer markupPrecious metals dealerThe spread between spot price and what you pay for the metal. Varies by product and dealer.1% to 5% over spot for common bullion; much higher for proof or premium coins
Transaction feeCustodian or dealerCharged per buy or sell transaction inside the account$0 to $40 per transaction
Wire transfer feeCustodianMoving funds in or out by bank wire$0 to $40 per wire

Fee ranges compiled from custodian fee schedules published by Equity Trust, STRATA Trust, GoldStar Trust, and Madison Trust, checked June 2026. Actual fees depend on the custodian and depository you select. Always request the full fee schedule in writing before opening an account.

The chart below shows how fixed annual fees affect different account sizes. A $400-per-year combined fee (custodian plus storage) represents a 1.33 percent annual drag on a $30,000 account but only 0.40 percent on a $100,000 account and 0.16 percent on a $250,000 account. Smaller balances carry the highest fixed-cost pressure relative to account value.

Bar chart showing annual gold IRA fee drag at three account balance levels: 1.33 percent on a $30,000 account, 0.40 percent on a $100,000 account, and 0.16 percent on a $250,000 account, assuming $400 in combined annual custodian and storage fees.
Annual gold IRA fee drag by account balance, assuming $200 in annual custodian fees plus $200 in annual storage fees ($400 total). Fixed fees hit smaller accounts harder. On a $30,000 account the same $400 equals a 1.33 percent annual drag; on a $250,000 account it equals 0.16 percent. Dealer markups at purchase are separate. Where the metal is actually stored

IRS rules require that precious metals held in an IRA be in the physical possession of a bank or an IRS-approved nonbank trustee. Keeping gold IRA metal at home or in a private safe deposit box constitutes a taxable distribution in the year the metal leaves the depository’s custody.

The landmark ruling on this point is McNulty v. Commissioner (2021). The U.S. Tax Court held that a taxpayer who took home delivery of IRA gold coins had effectively distributed the entire account value in the year of delivery, triggering income tax and the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty on the full amount.

For Hidalgo County residents, the approved depositories most commonly used for gold IRAs are:

  • Delaware Depository (Wilmington, DE): One of the most widely used SDIRA depositories. Works with most major self-directed IRA custodians. Fully insured, with segregated and commingled storage options.
  • Brinks Global Services (multiple U.S. locations): Large global security firm with precious metals storage capabilities. Works with multiple custodians for segregated storage.
  • CNT Depository (Bridgewater, MA): Used by several gold IRA dealers and custodians. IRS-approved for IRA metal storage.
  • International Depository Services / IDS (Delaware and Texas): Has a Texas facility in addition to its Delaware location, giving Hidalgo County residents a closer in-state option outside the state depository.
  • Texas Bullion Depository (Leander, TX): The state-run option, approximately 280 miles north of McAllen. Operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under IRS nonbank trustee approval since 2023. Class 3 vault, Texas Comptroller oversight, Lloyd’s of London insurance, segregated storage only.

Choosing the Texas Bullion Depository is a personal preference, not a financial requirement. The depository does not change the federal tax treatment of your IRA. It offers state-audited oversight and reduced counterparty exposure through a government-run entity. Confirm current pricing and custodian coordination directly at texasbulliondepository.gov.

When a gold IRA is not the right move

Cases where the gold IRA math works against you:

Small account balance. On a $15,000 account, $300 in combined annual fees represents a 2 percent drag before any dealer markup at purchase. That level of fixed-cost pressure requires substantial price appreciation just to break even. Gold IRA economics improve meaningfully at higher account balances.

Short time horizon. If you expect to need the funds within five years, the dealer markup on the buy side plus transaction costs on the exit compresses the window for any potential benefit. Gold IRAs work best as long-hold positions within a broader retirement plan.

Heavy markups on proof or premium coins. Some dealers push proof coin sets with markups of 30 to 100 percent over spot. The Texas no-income-tax advantage is absorbed quickly against that kind of entry cost. Common bullion products at markups close to spot are the practical choice.

Early withdrawal before age 59 and a half. The federal 10 percent additional tax on most early distributions applies regardless of Texas residency. On a $60,000 early withdrawal, the federal penalty alone is $6,000 before income tax is added. Texas removes no portion of that federal cost.

Active employer plan with no in-service rollover. Most 403(b) and 401(k) plans do not allow rollovers while you are still employed, unless the plan permits in-service withdrawals after age 59 and a half. Verify your plan’s specific rules before beginning any rollover process.

TRS monthly annuity already in payment. If you are already receiving a monthly annuity from the Teacher Retirement System of Texas, that payment stream cannot be rolled into a gold IRA or any IRA. Only a refund of your own TRS contributions, available on request if you separate from TRS-covered employment, may qualify for a rollover. Confirm your specific options with TRS before acting.

Frequently asked questions

Does Texas tax gold IRA distributions for Hidalgo County residents?

No. Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. A gold IRA distribution taken by a Hidalgo County resident, whether a required minimum distribution, an in-kind distribution of physical metal, or a Roth conversion, is taxed by the federal government only. There is no Texas state income tax return for personal IRA income and no Texas withholding request on Form 1099-R.

Can a Hidalgo County teacher roll over a TRS account into a gold IRA?

A Teacher Retirement System of Texas monthly annuity already in payment cannot be rolled into any IRA. However, if you are separating from TRS-covered employment and request a refund of your own contributions, that refund may be eligible for a direct rollover into a self-directed IRA, including a gold IRA. TRS accounts are governed by TRS plan documents and Texas state law. Confirm your specific options with TRS directly and consult a licensed tax advisor before proceeding.

Can I roll over a 403(b) from a McAllen hospital system into a gold IRA?

Yes, in most cases after separation from employment. A 403(b) at a former employer can be rolled directly into a self-directed IRA. Some plans allow in-service rollovers after age 59 and a half. A properly executed direct rollover triggers no federal tax and no Texas state tax. Verify your specific plan’s terms and any rollover timeline restrictions before proceeding.

Where would my gold IRA metal be stored if I live in Hidalgo County?

At an IRS-approved depository, not at home. Options include the Delaware Depository, Brinks, CNT Depository, IDS (with a Texas facility), and the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, approximately 280 miles from McAllen. The Texas Bullion Depository is state-run and state-audited, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets under IRS nonbank trustee approval granted in 2023.

What is the minimum balance to open a gold IRA?

There is no IRS-mandated minimum. In practice, custodians and dealers often set minimums in the $5,000 to $50,000 range. On small balances, fixed annual custodian and storage fees represent a high percentage of account value each year, which reduces the practical economics of a gold IRA at lower balances.

Can I hold silver, platinum, or palladium in my gold IRA?

Yes. The account can hold any IRS-approved precious metal: gold at .995 or finer (with the American Gold Eagle as a statutory exception at .9167), silver at .999 or finer, platinum at .9995 or finer, and palladium at .9995 or finer. The term “gold IRA” is informal; the more accurate name is a self-directed IRA holding precious metals.

How are required minimum distributions handled in a gold IRA?

RMDs begin at age 73 for those born between 1951 and 1959, and at age 75 for those born in 1960 or later, starting in 2033 under SECURE 2.0. Two options satisfy an RMD from a gold IRA: sell metal inside the account to distribute cash, or take an in-kind distribution of physical metal at fair market value on the distribution date.

For Hidalgo County residents, the RMD is taxed federally only. No Texas state return is required for IRA income. Source: SECURE 2.0 Act, IRS Publication 590-B, checked June 2026.

Does the Texas Bullion Depository reduce my taxes on gold IRA metal?

No. The depository is a storage facility, not a tax-advantaged structure. IRA tax treatment is governed by federal law and does not change based on where the metal is held. The Texas Bullion Depository notes that most precious-metals purchases in Texas are exempt from state sales tax, which matters for personal purchases outside an IRA but does not affect the tax treatment of IRA assets.
