Short on time? The essentials

  • A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA holding IRS-approved physical precious metals instead of stocks or bonds. Silver, platinum, and palladium are also permitted alongside gold under IRC Section 408(m)(3).
  • Galveston County had a 2020 Census population of 342,139. Galveston is the county seat. League City is the county's largest city. The county spans Galveston Island on the Gulf Coast and the mainland communities of the Greater Houston area, including the Texas City industrial zone.
  • Texas has no state personal income tax. Gold IRA distributions for Galveston County residents, including required minimum distributions starting at age 73, are taxed at the federal level only.
  • The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets (LSTA) under IRS nonbank trustee approval, is approximately 235 to 255 miles from most Galveston County communities. Texas residents can store IRA metal at a state-overseen facility inside Texas.
  • Eligible funding sources include 401(k) plans from private-sector employers, 403(b) plans from UTMB Health and other medical or educational employers, TRS accounts for school district employees (Galveston ISD, Texas City ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Santa Fe ISD), TCDRS accounts for county workers, TMRS accounts for city employees, and other traditional or Roth IRAs. The 2026 contribution limit is $7,500 ($8,600 for age 50 or older).
  • Metal must be held at an IRS-approved depository. Home storage of IRA-titled precious metals is not permitted. The U.S. Tax Court confirmed this in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021).
  • Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We do not sell gold, operate a depository, or maintain any office in Galveston County.

Who lives in Galveston County and why it shapes the gold IRA conversation

Galveston County had 342,139 residents in the 2020 Census. It occupies the Gulf Coast southeast of Houston, covering Galveston Island and a stretch of mainland communities that form the southern edge of the Greater Houston area. The county seat is Galveston. League City, on the mainland along I-45, is the county's largest city.

The county divides into two distinct economic zones. Galveston Island is anchored by tourism, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB Health), and the Port of Galveston, one of the busiest cruise homeports in North America. The mainland portion, especially Texas City and La Marque, hosts major refining and petrochemical operations: Valero Energy and Marathon Petroleum operate large refinery complexes in Texas City.

League City, Dickinson, and the communities along I-45 between Houston and Galveston function largely as Houston-area suburbs. Many residents commute to jobs at NASA Johnson Space Center in nearby Webster or to Clear Lake City, which sits just north of the county line. Healthcare employment at UTMB, Clear Lake Regional Medical Center, and related facilities generates a concentration of 403(b) accounts across the county.

School employees across Galveston ISD, Texas City ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Santa Fe ISD, and Friendswood ISD participate in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. County government workers are covered by the Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS). City employees in League City, Galveston, Texas City, Dickinson, La Marque, and Santa Fe typically participate in the Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS).

Workers at Valero, Marathon Petroleum, UTMB, and related private-sector employers carry 401(k) or 403(b) plans that become rollover-eligible after separation.

Retirement accounts in Galveston County and how they roll into a gold IRA

The funding path available to a Galveston County resident depends on which employer and plan type applies. A direct rollover avoids the 60-day clock, mandatory withholding, and any taxable event at the time of transfer.

Private-sector 401(k) from a refinery or industrial employer. Valero Energy and Marathon Petroleum operate large refinery complexes in Texas City. Workers at these facilities, and at the many contractors and logistics companies serving them, accumulate 401(k) balances over their careers. A 401(k) from any former private-sector employer can roll into a self-directed IRA via direct rollover. The check must go directly to the new custodian. No taxable event and no 20% withholding applies to a properly executed direct rollover.

403(b) from UTMB Health or another healthcare employer. UTMB Health is one of the largest employers in Galveston County. As part of the University of Texas System, UTMB employees typically carry UT System 403(b) plans. After separation, those balances may be eligible for rollover into a self-directed IRA. Verify your specific plan's rollover provisions and consult a tax advisor before acting.

Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS). TRS is a defined-benefit pension plan. A monthly TRS annuity already in payment cannot be rolled into a gold IRA. If you separated from Galveston ISD, Texas City ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Santa Fe ISD, or another covered employer before retirement and request a refund of your own member contributions, that amount may be eligible for a rollover.

Verify eligibility directly with TRS and consult a tax advisor before acting. See our TRS to gold IRA guide.

Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS). TCDRS covers Galveston County government employees. Like TRS, TCDRS is a defined-benefit plan. An active monthly TCDRS annuity cannot be rolled over. A refund of your own contributions after separation may be eligible under specific conditions. Confirm directly with TCDRS and your tax advisor before proceeding. See our TCDRS to gold IRA guide.

Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS). City employees in League City, Galveston, Texas City, Dickinson, La Marque, and Santa Fe typically participate in TMRS. TMRS is also a defined-benefit plan. A monthly TMRS annuity in payment cannot be rolled. A lump-sum refund of your own contributions after separation may qualify. Verify eligibility with TMRS and your tax advisor. See our TMRS to gold IRA guide.

Federal TSP and other plan types. Some Galveston County residents work in federal civilian or military roles, particularly given proximity to NASA Johnson Space Center and Ellington Field. TSP, 457(b), and plans from prior employers each have distinct rollover paths. See the Texas Gold IRA Rollover Guide for the full account-type breakdown.

Are there gold IRA companies or dealers in Galveston County?

No gold IRA company, dealer, or IRS-approved custodian operates an office in Galveston County. Searches for gold IRA providers near League City, Galveston, Texas City, or Dickinson return national providers who serve all U.S. zip codes remotely. Your Galveston County address does not restrict which custodian or dealer you can use.

Gold IRAs open entirely online. You choose a custodian, sign documents electronically, and fund by direct rollover or trustee-to-trustee transfer. The custodian buys IRS-approved metal from a dealer on your instruction. The dealer ships directly to an IRS-approved depository. No in-person meeting is required at any stage.

Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We do not sell gold, operate a depository, or provide in-person services anywhere in Galveston County.

Four checks to run on any national provider before signing:

  • IRS nonbank trustee approval: Verify the custodian appears on the IRS list at irs.gov/retirement-plans/approved-nonbank-trustees-and-custodians.
  • BBB rating and complaint record: Look up both the dealer and the custodian separately at bbb.org. An A or A+ rating with accreditation is publicly verifiable. High unresolved complaints are a concrete warning.
  • Written fee schedule before funding: Setup, annual administration, storage, and transaction fees must each appear in writing before any money moves.
  • Direct rollover only: The check must go from your plan directly to the new custodian. A check payable to you starts a 60-day clock and triggers 20% mandatory withholding on 401(k) distributions.

For a structured comparison of custodian options, see our gold IRA custodians guide.

Texas advantages: no state income tax and in-state storage

Texas has no state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution prohibits one, and a statewide referendum plus a two-thirds legislative supermajority would be required to create one. For Galveston County residents, every taxable gold IRA event, including RMDs starting at age 73 under SECURE 2.0, early withdrawals, and Roth conversions, is taxed on a federal return only. There is no Texas state return for personal IRA income. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.

The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is the only state-administered and state-audited precious-metals storage facility in the United States. It is approximately 235 to 255 miles from most Galveston County communities by road: roughly 245 miles from Galveston Island and approximately 236 miles from League City. Lone Star Tangible Assets (LSTA) operates the depository as a vendor under IRS nonbank trustee approval.

Galveston County residents who want IRA metal held at a state-overseen Texas facility can request the Texas Bullion Depository through their SDIRA custodian. The custodian coordinates the purchase and shipment. You do not transport metal yourself. Self-delivery of IRA-titled metal at any point constitutes a taxable distribution under federal law, as confirmed in McNulty v. Commissioner, 157 T.C. No. 10 (2021).

National depositories, including the Delaware Depository, Brinks Global Services, CNT Depository, and International Depository Services (IDS, with a Texas facility in Shiner), also qualify for IRA storage. For the full depository comparison, see our Texas gold IRA storage guide.

How a rollover actually works

A gold IRA rollover moves pre-tax funds from a qualified retirement account into a self-directed IRA holding physical precious metals. The most common paths for Galveston County residents are a direct rollover from a private-sector 401(k) held from refinery or healthcare employment, a 403(b) rollover from UTMB or other medical employers, or a trustee-to-trustee transfer from an existing traditional IRA.

  1. Open an SDIRA with an IRS-approved custodian. Choose a custodian from the IRS approved nonbank trustee list. Complete the application online. No in-person visit is required in League City, Galveston, Texas City, or anywhere in Galveston County. Custodians with published precious-metals IRA programs include Equity Trust Company, STRATA Trust Company, GoldStar Trust Company, and Madison Trust.
  2. Request a direct rollover from your existing plan. Contact your 401(k) or 403(b) administrator or prior IRA custodian. Request that funds go directly to the new SDIRA custodian. The check must be payable to the custodian, not to you. No 60-day clock begins. No 20% mandatory withholding applies to a properly executed direct rollover.
  3. Select IRS-approved metals and authorize the purchase. Choose qualifying metals meeting IRC Section 408(m)(3) standards: gold bars at .995 fineness or higher, American Gold Eagles (a statutory IRA exception), American Gold Buffalos, qualifying silver, platinum, or palladium products. The custodian executes the purchase with a dealer on your instruction.
  4. Dealer ships metal to an IRS-approved depository. Metal travels from the dealer directly to the depository under your SDIRA account name. You never take personal possession of IRA-titled metal. The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is one option for Texas residents. National depositories also qualify.

Can you roll your account into a gold IRA? Eligibility checker

Most retirement money can move into a gold IRA once it is an eligible rollover distribution. Pick your account and situation for a general answer. Always confirm the specifics with your plan administrator or custodian.

General guidance only, not tax or financial advice. Eligibility depends on your specific plan document and IRS rules; confirm with your plan administrator and a tax advisor. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 60-day rule and 20% withholding.

Fee drag and account size in a Galveston County context

Fixed annual gold IRA fees include the SDIRA custodian fee and the depository storage fee. Published ranges run $150 to $300 for custodians and $150 to $250 for depositories. A midpoint of $400 per year in combined fixed fees is a working estimate based on published schedules from Equity Trust, STRATA Trust, and GoldStar Trust (checked July 2026). Dealer markup at purchase, typically 1% to 5% over spot on standard bullion, is a separate one-time cost.

Fixed fees hit smaller accounts proportionally harder. On a $25,000 account, $400 per year represents 1.60% annual drag before any dealer markup. On a $100,000 account, the same $400 equals 0.40%. The refinery and healthcare sectors in Galveston County generate a wide range of account sizes: shorter-tenure workers may carry balances under $50,000, while long-term employees at UTMB or major refinery operations may have balances well above $100,000.

Most gold IRA-focused providers set informal minimums of $25,000 to $50,000. Augusta Precious Metals recommends $50,000 or more in rollover-eligible assets as a starting point. That threshold is worth comparing against your specific 401(k), 403(b), or IRA balance before beginning the process.

When a gold IRA is not the right move for a Galveston County saver

Cases where the economics or timing work against you:

Small account balance. On a $15,000 account, $300 to $400 in combined annual fees equals 2% to 2.7% drag before dealer markup. That is a high hurdle to clear each year from a fixed fee alone.

Active employment at a current plan. Most 401(k) and 403(b) plans do not permit rollovers while you are still employed, unless the plan allows in-service withdrawals after age 59 and a half. Rolling an active-employer plan early triggers a taxable distribution and a 10% federal penalty. Confirm your plan terms with the plan administrator first.

Short time horizon. Dealer markups on the buy side and additional dealer fees on the sell side compress the return window. Gold IRAs suit long-hold retirement positions. If you plan to draw funds within three to five years, the fee math on both sides works against you.

Numismatic coin upsells. Some dealers push proof coin sets with premiums of 30% to 100% over spot. That markup is permanent drag on the account. Standard bullion products with low markups over spot are the better choice for IRA accounts. See our guide to the numismatic coin upsell and how it works.

Early withdrawal before age 59 and a half. A 10% federal penalty applies to most early IRA distributions under IRS Topic 558. Texas has no state income tax, so there is no second tax layer, but the federal 10% still applies. On a $50,000 early withdrawal, that is $5,000 in penalty before ordinary income tax is calculated.

A TRS annuity already in payment. If you currently receive a monthly TRS defined-benefit pension from Galveston ISD, Texas City ISD, Clear Creek ISD, or another Galveston County school district, that income stream cannot be rolled into a gold IRA. Only a refund of your own member contributions upon early separation may be eligible. Verify with TRS and a tax advisor before acting.

TCDRS or TMRS annuity in payment. Active monthly pensions from TCDRS (Galveston County employees) or TMRS (city employees in League City, Galveston, Texas City, and other Galveston County municipalities) cannot be rolled over. Only a member contribution refund after separation may qualify, under specific conditions. Consult your tax advisor before acting.

403(b) from a current UTMB or UT System employer. If you are still employed at UTMB Health or another UT System institution, your 403(b) plan likely restricts in-service rollovers before age 59 and a half. Check your plan document with your HR office before initiating a transfer.

Frequently asked questions

Are there gold IRA companies or dealers in Galveston County?

No. There are no gold IRA companies, custodians, or dealers with a Galveston County office, whether in League City, Galveston, Texas City, Dickinson, La Marque, or Santa Fe. National providers serve all U.S. zip codes remotely. No local office visit is required at any stage of opening or managing a gold IRA.

Does Texas tax gold IRA distributions for Galveston County residents?

No. Texas has no state personal income tax. Distributions from a gold IRA held by a Galveston County resident, including RMDs starting at age 73, are taxed by the federal government only. There is no Texas state income tax return for personal IRA income and no Texas withholding on Form 1099-R. Federal ordinary income tax rates apply based on the distribution amount and your tax bracket. Consult your tax advisor for your situation.

Can I roll my Valero or Marathon refinery 401(k) into a gold IRA?

Yes, once you have separated from that employer. A 401(k) from a former private-sector employer, including from Valero Energy, Marathon Petroleum, or any contractor in the Texas City refinery complex, is eligible for a direct rollover into a self-directed IRA after separation. If you are still employed there, check whether your plan permits in-service withdrawals at age 59 and a half. A direct rollover generates no taxable event and no 20% withholding. See our 401(k) to gold IRA guide.

Can I roll my TRS account from a Galveston County school district into a gold IRA?

A monthly TRS defined-benefit pension already in payment cannot be rolled into a gold IRA. If you separated from Galveston ISD, Texas City ISD, Clear Creek ISD, Dickinson ISD, Santa Fe ISD, or another TRS-covered employer before retirement and request a refund of your own member contributions, that amount may be eligible for a rollover. Verify eligibility directly with TRS and consult your tax advisor. See our TRS to gold IRA guide.

How far is the Texas Bullion Depository from Galveston County?

The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander is approximately 245 miles from Galveston Island and approximately 236 miles from League City by road. You do not need to travel there. The custodian coordinates metal shipment from the dealer to the depository. Self-delivery of IRA-titled metal constitutes a taxable distribution under federal law, as the U.S. Tax Court confirmed in McNulty v. Commissioner (2021). Galveston County residents access the depository through their SDIRA custodian, entirely remotely.

What is the minimum balance to open a gold IRA?

There is no IRS-mandated minimum. In practice, most custodians and dealers set informal minimums of $25,000 to $50,000. Below $25,000, fixed annual fees of approximately $400 represent more than 1.6% annual drag before any dealer markup. Most gold IRA-focused providers look for $50,000 or more in rollover-eligible assets as a starting point. Check your specific 401(k), 403(b), or IRA balance against that threshold before beginning.

Can I roll a 403(b) from UTMB Health into a gold IRA?

After separating from UTMB or another UT System employer, a 403(b) balance may be eligible for a direct rollover into a self-directed IRA. The rollover process is the same as for a 401(k): request a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to avoid the 60-day clock and 20% withholding. Verify your specific plan's distribution rules with UTMB Human Resources and consult a tax advisor before proceeding. See our 403(b) to gold IRA guide.

What metals can I hold in a gold IRA besides gold?

Under IRC Section 408(m)(3), a self-directed IRA may hold silver at .999 fineness or higher, platinum at .9995, and palladium at .9995, alongside gold at .995 or higher. The American Gold Eagle is a statutory exception, IRA-eligible at its .9167 fineness. The American Silver Eagle also qualifies by statute. Pre-1965 junk silver coins, the South African Krugerrand, and any numismatic or graded collectible coins are not eligible.

What happens to my gold IRA when I take a required minimum distribution?

At age 73 (or 75 if born in 1960 or later, beginning in 2033), you must take an annual RMD from traditional gold IRA accounts. You can satisfy it by liquidating enough metal to generate the required cash amount, or by taking an in-kind metal distribution if your custodian supports it.

The distribution is taxed federally at your ordinary income rate. Texas has no state income tax on it. See our gold IRA RMD guide for the full calculation process.
