Short on time? The essentials
- Two dealers publish specific dollar figures on their public gold IRA fee pages: Birch Gold Group at 235 dollars flat annual (plus 50 dollar setup and 30 dollar wire) and American Bullion at 160 dollars annual on its Precious Metals IRA product (plus 25 dollar setup).
- Four dealers do not publish specific fee amounts on the pages we captured: Augusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold Investments, American Hartford Gold, and Goldco. Each quotes fees during an intake call rather than on a website.
- Custodian benchmarks published directly by the trust companies: STRATA Trust Precious Metals tier charges 50 dollars setup, 125 dollars annual, and 100 dollars commingled or 175 dollars segregated storage, for 275 to 350 dollars year one on a small account.
- Minimums vary from 5,000 dollars at Birch, 10,000 dollars at Goldco and American Bullion (recommended), 20,000 dollars at Noble Gold, to an industry-reported 50,000 dollars at Augusta Precious Metals.
- Waivers matter for a fair comparison. Birch pays the first year of recurring fees on transfers over 50,000 dollars. Augusta promotes a multi-year fee waiver on qualifying rollovers, subject to terms disclosed at consultation.
- The dealer premium over spot on standard IRA-eligible bullion runs about 3 to 7 percent at reasonable dealers and dwarfs the flat annual stack. It is the number no dealer prints publicly.
- The single biggest red flag is any dealer that will not commit the premium over spot to writing, or that steers a bullion allocation toward a proof or "exclusive" coin at 15 to 30 percent premium.
- Texas has no state personal income tax under Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution, so distributions are taxed federally only.
- The Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets (an IRS-approved non-bank trustee since 2023), stores IRA metal in-state under State of Texas oversight.

How to actually compare gold IRA fees across companies
The honest way to compare fees across gold IRA companies starts with a hard fact. Most household-name dealers do not print specific dollar amounts on their public fee pages. That is not itself a red flag, but it means a side-by-side comparison based only on marketing pages is impossible for four of the six dealers below.
The comparison that actually works pulls three data streams. First, the public dealer fee page where one exists. Second, the paired self-directed IRA custodian's own published fee schedule (STRATA Trust, Equity Trust, GoldStar Trust). Third, a written quote from an intake specialist that names every line item on the dealer letterhead. Any of the three alone is incomplete.
Two dealers below print fees publicly: Birch Gold Group and American Bullion. Two paired custodians benchmark the accounts: STRATA Trust and Equity Trust. Four dealers do not publish specific numbers: Augusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold, American Hartford Gold, and Goldco. The final decision belongs to a written quote from your target dealer.
Published-fee dealers vs "call for a quote" dealers
Two dealers publish specific dollar figures on their public gold IRA pages. Birch Gold Group prints a 50 dollar Set-Up Fee and a 30 dollar Wire Transfer Fee. It then prints 110 dollars annually for Storage and Insurance plus 125 dollars annually for Management Fees. That produces a flat 235 dollar recurring cost regardless of account size (source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/, checked July 2026). Birch also states that on transfers over 50,000 dollars it pays the customer's first year of fees.
American Bullion publishes three IRA product tiers on its FAQ page. The Precious Metals IRA carries a 25 dollar set-up fee and a 160 dollar annual account fee. The Basic IRA carries no set-up and a 200 dollar annual account fee. The Flex IRA carries no set-up and a 275 dollar annual account fee.
All three American Bullion tiers include an asterisk noting that annual account fees may vary. Fees can vary above 100,000 dollars invested, or if metals are stored in a segregated facility (source: americanbullion.com/faq/, checked July 2026).
Four dealers do not publish specific dollar amounts on their public gold IRA pages. Augusta Precious Metals communicates fees through its intake specialists and promotes a multi-year fee waiver on qualifying rollovers. Noble Gold Investments states a "flat fee" model without printing the dollar figure.
American Hartford Gold describes storage as "competitive" without a printed schedule. Goldco does not print setup, custodian, or storage figures on its gold IRA product pages and advertises a silver-bonus promotion instead. None of these choices is inherently wrong, but every reader should insist on the same written line items before signing.
Side-by-side comparison across seven providers
| Provider | Setup (one-time) | Annual recurring | Account minimum | Waiver on qualifying rollover |

| American Bullion (Precious Metals IRA) | 25 dollars | 160 dollars annual account fee | 10,000 dollars recommended | No standing waiver printed |
| American Bullion (Basic IRA) | 0 dollars | 200 dollars annual account fee | Not printed | No standing waiver printed |
| American Bullion (Flex IRA) | 0 dollars | 275 dollars annual account fee | Not printed | No standing waiver printed |
| Augusta Precious Metals | Not published on public pages | Not published on public pages | Not published; industry-reported around 50,000 dollars by Money and Investopedia | Multi-year fee waiver promoted on qualifying rollovers; terms disclosed at consultation |

What each company publishes on its fee schedule
Birch Gold Group
Birch Gold Group is the most transparent household-name dealer in this segment on the flat-fee side. The IRA page at birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/ prints four specific line items: 50 dollars Account Set Up Fee, 30 dollars Wire Transfer Fee, 110 dollars Storage and Insurance, and 125 dollars Management Fees.
That produces a 235 dollar flat annual recurring cost that does not scale with account size. Minimum initial purchase is 5,000 dollars. On transfers over 50,000 dollars, Birch states it pays the customer's first year of fees.
The paired custodian on the Birch IRA page is Equity Trust Company. Birch metal is offered at Delaware Depository, Brinks Global Services, International Depository Services, and the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, among others. The specific storage line item of 110 dollars covers storage and insurance jointly, per the printed page.
American Bullion
American Bullion is the other publisher of specific numbers. The FAQ at americanbullion.com/faq/ prints three IRA product tiers. The Precious Metals IRA is the one most gold-IRA readers use. It carries a 25 dollar set-up fee and a 160 dollar annual account fee.
The Basic IRA product accepts precious metals plus publicly registered assets. It carries no set-up fee and a 200 dollar annual account fee. The Flex IRA product also accepts real estate and private equity. It carries no set-up fee and a 275 dollar annual account fee.
All three American Bullion tiers include an asterisk that fees may vary above 100,000 dollars invested or with segregated storage. The recommended minimum rollover is 10,000 dollars.
Storage is with Delaware Depository. American Bullion also operates a Home Storage Gold IRA marketing page that describes a checkbook-LLC structure. The IRS position and the 2021 United States Tax Court ruling in McNulty v. Commissioner treated a home-stored IRA as a full taxable distribution. Read the home-storage page cautiously and ask for written indemnification before agreeing to any home-based structure.
Augusta Precious Metals
Augusta Precious Metals does not publish specific dollar amounts for account minimum, setup fee, annual custodian fee, or annual storage fee on the pages we captured. The company promotes a multi-year fee waiver on qualifying rollover accounts on its public materials, with terms disclosed during the free consultation. Third-party outlets, including Money and Investopedia, report an industry entry threshold of about 50,000 dollars. Treat that as industry-reported until Augusta confirms it in writing.
Augusta pairs with a qualified self-directed IRA custodian described on the public pages, with the specific trustee name held for the consultation call. Augusta is our affiliate partner, and the intake process typically fits eligible rollovers of 50,000 dollars or more. Nobody can predict where metal prices will go.
Noble Gold Investments
Noble Gold Investments states a 20,000 dollar gold IRA minimum on its Gold IRA FAQ. Its public pages describe a flat-fee model without printing the specific dollar amounts for setup, annual custodian, or storage. Marketing copy repeats the words "flat fees" and "no hidden fees" without a written schedule. For Texas readers, Noble Gold offers storage through International Depository Services at IDS Dallas, a private commercial vault distinct from the state-run Texas Bullion Depository in Leander.
The gap between "flat fee" marketing and a written schedule is the wedge. Ask Noble Gold, in writing, for the exact setup, annual, and storage dollar amounts before signing.
American Hartford Gold
American Hartford Gold does not publish a specific account minimum, setup fee, annual custodian fee, or annual storage fee on the IRA pages we captured. Its copy describes storage fees as "competitive" and states that setup fees "may" apply. The paired custodian is Equity Trust Company.
American Hartford Gold storage partners include A-M Global Logistics, Delaware Depository, Entrust, International Depository Services, and (in body copy) Brinks Global Services. The Texas storage site listed is IDS Irving at 8732 N. Royal Lane, a private commercial vault inside Dallas County. That is not the state-run Texas Bullion Depository.
American Hartford Gold offers segregated storage at the depository sites where it is available. Ask for the setup fee, annual custodian fee, and annual storage fee in writing on the intake call before signing anything.
Goldco
Goldco lists a 10,000 dollar minimum purchase for a precious metals IRA on the FAQ at goldco.com/products/gold-iras/. Goldco names Equity Trust as a paired self-directed IRA custodian and confirms the metal is held at a separate insured depository. Goldco does not publish specific setup, annual custodian, or annual storage figures on the pages we captured.
The Goldco public marketing focuses on a Free Silver bonus tier. Qualifying premium coin purchases of 50,000 to 99,999 dollars earn up to 5 percent back in silver. Purchases at 100,000 dollars or more earn up to 10 percent back. Additional rules apply per Goldco.
A silver-bonus promotion is not a fee waiver. It is a marketing incentive on qualifying premium coin purchases. The premium built into "premium coins" is where the incentive is funded. Ask Goldco for the specific setup, annual custodian, and annual storage figures in writing, and ask for the dealer premium over spot on plain American Gold Eagles at your target order size.
The first-year flat fee stack chart at 50,000 dollars
The chart below anchors the comparison on the providers that publish specific dollar amounts. It shows the first-year flat fee stack (setup plus first-year recurring) at a 50,000 dollar rollover for American Bullion's Precious Metals IRA, STRATA Trust's Precious Metals tier billed directly, and Birch Gold Group without any waiver applied. The four "call for a quote" dealers are grouped in a Not published row rather than shown as a numeric bar.

Two takeaways. First, the published band on flat fees sits between 185 dollars and 315 dollars in year one at a 50,000 dollar rollover, before any dealer premium. Second, the 130 dollar spread between the low and high end is the visible part of the comparison. The invisible part is the dealer premium on the metal itself, which is the largest first-year cost on any gold IRA at any dealer.
Two follow-on notes on the chart. Birch pays the first year of recurring fees on transfers over 50,000 dollars, which pulls its effective year-one recurring toward 80 dollars (setup and wire only). Augusta promotes a multi-year fee waiver on qualifying rollovers; the specific dollar terms are disclosed at consultation, so they cannot be graphed against Birch's printed number.
The dealer premium is what usually decides the winner
The flat fee stack at a reasonable dealer runs 185 to 315 dollars in year one on a 50,000 dollar rollover. The dealer premium over spot at 5 percent on the same 50,000 dollars is 2,500 dollars, roughly eight to fourteen times the flat stack. The premium is not printed on any public dealer page and is not comparable without a written quote on a specific coin.
Typical premium on standard IRA-eligible bullion coins at reasonable dealers runs about 3 to 7 percent over the London PM fix. That range covers American Gold Eagles, American Gold Buffalos, Canadian Gold Maple Leafs, and Austrian Gold Philharmonics.
Premium on LBMA or COMEX-approved bars (PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Perth Mint) is often 2 to 4 percent. That is the lowest premium of any IRA-eligible product. Premium on proof coins, promotional coins, and "exclusive" packages is often 15 to 30 percent and sometimes higher. Regulators including the Commodity Futures Trading Commission have flagged this range as the primary source of buyer complaint on gold IRAs.
The single most useful comparison a reader can run is three dealer premium quotes on the same standard bullion product on the same trading day. A 1 percent premium difference on a 50,000 dollar order is 500 dollars, which by itself exceeds any published flat-fee difference between the two publishing dealers.
How to get the premium in writing
Ask each candidate dealer for the premium over the London PM fix as a percentage on a named product, at a specific order size. For example: "What is your premium over the London PM fix for a one-ounce American Gold Eagle at a 50,000 dollar order size, priced today?" The answer should arrive in an email or a PDF, not by phone.
A dealer that quotes a clear percentage and references the London PM fix is transparent. A dealer that answers only with a total price, or that steers the conversation toward a proof or "exclusive" coin, is not. Walk from the second and repeat the same script with the next dealer on your list.
Custodian benchmarks published directly by the trust companies
Two self-directed IRA custodians publish fee schedules that the general public can read without a phone call. These schedules also serve as a benchmark against which any dealer's fee claim can be checked, because the custodian charges apply whether the account was opened through Birch, Goldco, American Hartford Gold, or a direct application.
| Custodian | Setup | Annual account fee | Annual precious-metals storage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| STRATA Trust Company (Precious Metals tier) | 50 dollars (waived for electronic application) | 125 dollars | Commingled 100 dollars; segregated 175 dollars | Outgoing wire 35 dollars. Depository exceptions may apply, per the STRATA page. |
| STRATA Trust Company (Basic tier) | 50 dollars (waived for electronic application) | 150 dollars | Charged at Precious Metals tier rates if metals are held | For readers who also hold publicly registered assets. |
| STRATA Trust Company (Flex tier) | 50 dollars (waived for electronic application) | 350 dollars plus asset-holding fees | Charged at Precious Metals tier rates if metals are held | For readers who also hold private assets or real estate. |
Source: stratatrust.com/resource-center/strata-fees/, checked July 2026. Equity Trust Company, GoldStar Trust Company, Madison Trust Company, and Kingdom Trust also serve as paired custodians for many gold IRA dealers. Confirm current fees directly with each custodian before signing.
Two comparisons follow from the STRATA schedule. Birch Gold Group's total recurring stack at 235 dollars per year sits below STRATA's Precious Metals tier direct total of 225 dollars annual (125 dollar account plus 100 dollar commingled storage), and roughly matches after storage differences. American Bullion's Precious Metals IRA at 160 dollars annual sits below STRATA's Precious Metals tier as well. The published dealer prices are not out of line with what a custodian charges directly.
Equity Trust Company is the paired custodian on the Birch, American Hartford Gold, and Goldco IRA product pages. Equity Trust's precious-metals schedule is quoted on request rather than printed as a single tier, and the effective charge is bundled into the dealer's stated recurring cost where the dealer prints one.
Texas advantages after the fee stack
Federal fee rules apply the same way in Texas as in any other state. Two Texas-specific facts, both grounded in state law, change what stays in the account after federal tax on any eventual distribution.
No state personal income tax on distributions
Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution prohibits a state personal income tax. The gold IRA eventually pays out, whether as an RMD at age 73 or 75 under SECURE 2.0, an early withdrawal before age 59 and a half, or a Roth conversion. In every case the tax is federal only. A retiree moving into Texas from California, New York, or Oregon gains state tax savings on every future distribution.
The fee stack itself does not change. The after-tax value of what remains in the account after the fees is higher for a Texas resident than for a resident of a high-tax state.
Texas Bullion Depository as an in-state storage option
The Texas Bullion Depository was authorized by House Bill 483 of the 84th Texas Legislature and signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 12, 2015. It began operations in 2017 on a purpose-built campus in Leander, north of Austin. The vendor operator is Lone Star Tangible Assets LP, which received IRS approval as a non-bank trustee in 2023 and holds IRA metal on behalf of self-directed IRA custodians. The state-run vault is available for IRA storage.
Birch Gold Group lists the Texas Bullion Depository as an approved storage option on its dedicated Texas storage page. American Hartford Gold names IDS Irving as its Texas storage site rather than the Texas Bullion Depository. Noble Gold routes Texas storage through IDS Dallas.
Augusta Precious Metals, American Bullion, and Goldco do not name the Texas Bullion Depository as an available storage option on the pages we captured. If state-run storage matters, ask the dealer in writing before opening the account. Confirm current IRA storage fees directly with the depository (source: texasbulliondepository.gov IRA Storage Services page, checked July 2026).

Run the fee-drag calculator on your target amount
The calculator below estimates the annual drag of a flat custodian and storage stack on the gold portion of your IRA. It does not include the one-time dealer premium, which is paid at purchase and depends on the specific coin or bar and the dealer's quote in writing.
Use the calculator as a floor test. Enter the recurring flat stack from the dealer you are pricing (235 dollars for Birch, 160 dollars for American Bullion Precious Metals IRA, or the quoted figure from a "call for a quote" dealer) and your target gold dollar amount. If the annual drag is above 1 percent per year on the gold portion, either raise the target amount or hold that slice as a low-cost gold ETF inside a regular IRA.
Texas gold IRA fee-drag calculator
Texas gold IRAs charge mostly flat dollar fees (setup, annual custodian, storage). Flat fees take a much bigger bite out of a small account than a large one. Enter your numbers to see the drag.
Estimate only. Fee amounts vary by provider and are often not published; enter figures you confirm in writing. This tool ignores metal price changes and the dealer spread, which also affect returns. Not financial advice.

How to compare gold IRA fees across companies
The seven steps below are the process a careful reader can walk before signing at any of the six dealers profiled above. Each step corresponds to a specific number or document to save.
- Read the public fee page where it exists. For Birch Gold Group, birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/. For American Bullion, americanbullion.com/faq/. For Augusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold, American Hartford Gold, and Goldco, note that a written intake quote will replace the missing page.
- Ask the intake specialist for a written fee schedule. Setup, annual custodian, annual storage (commingled and segregated), wire, and distribution fees. Get the document as a PDF or an email, not a verbal figure. This step matters most for the four dealers that do not publish specific numbers.
- Confirm the paired custodian's own published schedule. Cross-check the dealer's number against the custodian's public fee page where one exists. STRATA Trust prints its schedule at stratatrust.com/resource-center/strata-fees/. Any dealer figure that undercuts the custodian's published rate deserves a follow-up question.
- Ask for the dealer premium over spot as a percentage on a named product. "What is your premium over the London PM fix for a one-ounce American Gold Eagle at a 100,000 dollar order size, priced today?" Get the answer in writing. Repeat with a second and third dealer on the same trading day.
- Refuse any proof, promotional, or "exclusive" coin recommendation for a bullion allocation. Standard IRA-eligible bullion at 3 to 7 percent premium is the target for a gold IRA position. A push toward a 15 to 30 percent premium coin is a signal to walk.
- Total the four fees on your specific target amount. Setup plus first-year recurring plus (target dollar amount times dealer premium percent) equals year-one total. Divide by the target dollar amount for the year-one drag as a share of the account. A 50,000 dollar rollover at a 3 to 5 percent premium and a 250 dollar flat stack should land near 3.5 to 5.5 percent year one.
- Sign only after the numbers match on paper. The custodian agreement, the depository storage agreement, and the dealer invoice should all reflect the fees you were quoted. If any number moves, stop and ask why in writing before continuing.
When any of these companies is a bad fit
Every dealer above serves a specific reader profile. The situations below are common ones where none of the six is the right first stop, or where the fee-comparison exercise itself is the wrong task. No call-to-action attaches to this section.
Gold portion under 25,000 dollars. A 235 to 315 dollar per year recurring stack is above 1.0 percent at 25,000 dollars and above 3.0 percent at 10,000 dollars, before any dealer premium. A low-cost gold ETF inside a regular IRA at Fidelity or Schwab at roughly 0.25 percent expense ratio delivers similar exposure at a fraction of the drag. The comparison across gold IRA dealers is moot at that balance.
Time horizon under three years. The dealer premium is paid at purchase and cannot be recovered on a short sale. A round trip inside three years pays the premium going in, hits the bid-ask spread coming out, and pays the flat annual stack the whole time. The comparison table above does not change that.
Dealer will not commit the premium over spot to writing. If any of the six dealers profiled above answers your premium question with a total price and no percent, or steers to a proof coin as the "IRA-eligible recommendation," the flat-fee comparison is beside the point. Move to a dealer that will state the premium as a percent over the London PM fix, on the record.
Home storage of IRA metal. The 2021 United States Tax Court ruling in McNulty v. Commissioner treated a home-stored IRA as a full taxable distribution. American Bullion markets a home-storage page. Ask for written indemnity against a McNulty-style outcome before agreeing to any home-based structure. Without that indemnity, the safer read is that home-storage IRAs remain a live tax risk.
Dealer and custodian are the same party or share ownership. The IRS rules require an arms-length custodian and dealer relationship. If the same corporate parent owns both, the fee schedule and the metal selection lose independence. Ask about corporate ownership before signing.
Fee comparison used as the only criterion. Two dealers with identical flat fees can differ by thousands of dollars on the dealer premium at a specific order size. The comparison table above is a starting point, not a decision.
Frequently asked questions
Which gold IRA companies publish their fees?
Two household-name dealers do. Birch Gold Group prints a 50 dollar setup, a 30 dollar wire, 110 dollars for storage and insurance, and 125 dollars for management fees on its precious-metals IRA page. That produces a 235 dollar flat recurring cost.
American Bullion prints three IRA product tiers on its FAQ, with a Precious Metals IRA at 25 dollars setup and 160 dollars annual. Augusta Precious Metals, Noble Gold Investments, American Hartford Gold, and Goldco do not publish specific dollar amounts on their public gold IRA pages. Each communicates fees during an intake call.
What are Birch Gold Group fees for a gold IRA?
Birch Gold Group prints its fee schedule on birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/. Account setup is 50 dollars. Wire transfer is 30 dollars. Storage and insurance is 110 dollars annually. Management fees are 125 dollars annually. Total recurring: 235 dollars flat per year, regardless of account size. Minimum initial purchase is 5,000 dollars. On transfers over 50,000 dollars, Birch pays the customer's first year of recurring fees (source: birchgold.com, checked July 2026).
What are American Bullion fees for a gold IRA?
American Bullion publishes three IRA tiers on americanbullion.com/faq/. The Precious Metals IRA carries a 25 dollar set-up fee and a 160 dollar annual account fee. The Basic IRA carries no set-up fee and a 200 dollar annual account fee. The Flex IRA carries no set-up fee and a 275 dollar annual account fee.
All three American Bullion tiers include an asterisk that fees may vary above 100,000 dollars invested or with segregated storage. The recommended minimum rollover is 10,000 dollars (source: americanbullion.com/faq/, checked July 2026).
What are Augusta Precious Metals fees for a gold IRA?
Augusta Precious Metals does not publish specific dollar amounts for setup, annual custodian, or annual storage on its public pages. The company promotes a multi-year fee waiver on qualifying rollovers, with terms disclosed during the free consultation. Third-party outlets, including Money and Investopedia, report an industry entry threshold around 50,000 dollars. Treat that as industry-reported until Augusta confirms the current minimum and fees in writing during the consultation call.
What are Noble Gold Investments fees for a gold IRA?
Noble Gold states a 20,000 dollar gold IRA minimum on its Gold IRA FAQ. It describes a flat-fee model without printing the specific dollar amounts for setup, annual custodian, or annual storage. Marketing copy repeats "flat fees" and "no hidden fees" without a written schedule. For Texas readers, Noble Gold offers storage at International Depository Services in Dallas (source: noblegoldinvestments.com/invest/texas-storage/, checked July 2026). Ask for the exact dollar figures in writing before signing.
What are American Hartford Gold fees for a gold IRA?
American Hartford Gold does not publish a specific account minimum, setup fee, annual custodian fee, or annual storage fee on the IRA pages we captured. Its copy describes storage as "competitive" and states that setup fees "may" apply. The paired custodian is Equity Trust Company.
The Texas storage site named on the American Hartford Gold pages is IDS Irving, a private commercial vault at 8732 N. Royal Lane. That is not the state-run Texas Bullion Depository in Leander (source: americanhartfordgold.com/goldira-retirement-accounts/, checked July 2026). Ask for the specific figures in writing on the intake call.
What are Goldco fees for a gold IRA?
Goldco lists a 10,000 dollar minimum purchase on the FAQ at goldco.com/products/gold-iras/ and names Equity Trust as a paired self-directed IRA custodian. Goldco does not publish specific setup, annual custodian, or annual storage figures on the pages we captured.
The Goldco public marketing highlights a Free Silver bonus. Qualifying premium coin purchases of 50,000 to 99,999 dollars can earn up to 5 percent back. Purchases at 100,000 dollars or more can earn up to 10 percent back. Additional rules apply per Goldco. A silver-bonus promotion is not a fee waiver; it is a marketing incentive on qualifying premium coin purchases.
Which gold IRA company is cheapest?
On published flat fees at a 50,000 dollar rollover, American Bullion's Precious Metals IRA at 185 dollars year one is the lowest of the two dealers that print specific numbers. Birch Gold Group at 315 dollars year one, without any waiver applied, sits at the top of the published band. The four dealers that do not publish specific numbers cannot be ranked on flat fees alone.
The dealer premium over spot on the metal itself dwarfs the flat-fee spread at any reasonable order size. So "cheapest on flat fees" does not necessarily mean "cheapest overall." Get the premium in writing before deciding.
Do all gold IRA companies charge the same fees?
No. Two dealers publish specific numbers and four do not. Even among the two that publish, the flat-fee stack ranges from 185 dollars (American Bullion Precious Metals IRA) to 315 dollars (Birch Gold Group without waiver) in year one at a 50,000 dollar rollover. Waivers matter: Birch pays the first year of recurring fees on transfers over 50,000 dollars, and Augusta promotes a multi-year waiver on qualifying rollovers with terms disclosed at consultation.
How do I compare gold IRA fees fairly?
Three steps. First, get the four line items (setup, annual custodian, annual storage, dealer premium) in writing from each candidate. Second, cross-check the dealer's number against the paired custodian's own published schedule where one exists. STRATA Trust prints its schedule; other custodians quote on request.
Third, get the dealer premium over spot as a percent on a named product at a specific order size. Ask three dealers on the same trading day. The premium is where the biggest dollar difference lives, and it is the number no dealer prints.
