Short on time? The essentials
- A gold IRA is a self-directed IRA holding IRS-approved physical precious metals in place of stocks or bonds. Silver, platinum, and palladium are eligible alongside gold.
- The DFW metroplex spans Dallas County, Tarrant County, and surrounding counties including Collin, Denton, Rockwall, Parker, Ellis, Kaufman, and Johnson. Any U.S. resident can use any IRS-approved custodian; your county does not restrict your choices.
- Texas has no state personal income tax. Gold IRA distributions to DFW residents are taxed federally only, with no Texas state income tax on top.
- Eligible rollover sources include 401(k) plans from former employers, traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, 403(b), 457(b), TSP, and most pension lump-sum contribution refunds. Active defined-benefit pensions generally cannot be rolled while you are still accruing benefits.
- Annual contribution limits for 2026: $7,500 standard; $8,600 for those age 50 or older (the $1,100 catch-up provision). These limits apply across all your IRAs combined, not per account.
- Metal must sit at an IRS-approved depository, not at home or in a bank safe-deposit box. A Texas option is the state-run Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets.
- Dallas-area defined-benefit pension members (DPFP, ERF) can generally roll only a lump-sum refund of member contributions, not the ongoing monthly annuity. Verify your specific plan rules directly with your administrator.
- Annual fixed-fee drag on a $100,000 gold IRA: roughly 0.40 percent in combined custodian and storage fees before dealer markups. That percentage shrinks as balance grows.
- Harry’s Coins is a Texas editorial authority. We have no store or office in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

What a gold IRA means for DFW residents
A gold IRA is a self-directed individual retirement account that holds physical precious metals instead of stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. The IRS does not use the term “gold IRA” in the tax code. It calls the structure a self-directed IRA (SDIRA), and it operates under the same contribution limits, distribution rules, and tax treatment as any other IRA.
The key structural requirement: the account must be managed by an IRS-approved nonbank trustee or bank-as-trustee. That custodian opens the account, purchases metals on your direction, and coordinates delivery to an IRS-approved depository. No metal comes to your home without triggering a taxable distribution.
Living in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex does not limit which custodian or depository you use. The national pool of IRS-approved custodians and depositories is open to any U.S. resident. What Texas residency does affect is the state-level tax treatment of distributions you eventually take from the account.
The DFW metroplex covers Dallas County and Tarrant County as its two primary anchors, plus surrounding counties: Collin, Denton, Rockwall, Parker, Ellis, Kaufman, and Johnson. Workers across these counties have access to the same custodian and depository options, the same federal IRA rules, and the same Texas tax advantage.
Texas advantages: no income tax and the state depository
Texas does not impose a state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution, strengthened by Proposition 4 in 2019, requires a two-thirds legislative supermajority and a statewide voter referendum before any personal income tax could be enacted. That protection is structurally more durable than a simple statutory exemption.
For a DFW-area gold IRA holder, every taxable distribution reports on federal Form 1099-R and is taxed on federal Form 1040 only. There is no Texas state return for personal IRA income, no Texas withholding on distributions, and no Texas tax on Roth conversions. Required minimum distributions, early withdrawals, and partial conversions all run through the federal system alone.
The gap against high-tax states compounds over decades. A California retiree faces a state income tax rate up to 13.3 percent on large distributions. A DFW retiree taking the same distributions owes $0 to Texas. That gap preserves after-tax income for spouses, heirs, and the next generation in ways that accumulate over a long retirement.
The second Texas advantage is the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander. Established by law signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 12, 2015, and operated since 2017 by Lone Star Tangible Assets (LSTA), it is the only state-administered and state-audited precious-metals depository in the United States.
LSTA received IRS approval as a nonbank trustee, which allows IRA-titled metal to be held at the facility. Leander is approximately 190 to 200 miles from central Dallas and Fort Worth via I-35. Verify current custodian relationships and fee schedules at texasbulliondepository.gov before committing.
DFW pension accounts and rollover paths
Dallas and Fort Worth have distinct pension systems covering government employees across the metroplex. Which type of account you hold determines whether and how much you can roll into a gold IRA.
Defined-benefit pensions (DPFP, ERF): A defined-benefit plan pays a monthly annuity for life. The ongoing annuity itself cannot be rolled into any IRA. What may be eligible is a lump-sum refund of your own member contributions plus credited interest, available when you separate from service before vesting.
The Dallas Police & Fire Pension Fund (DPFP) and the Dallas Employees’ Retirement Fund (ERF) follow this structure. Verify your specific plan rules with your plan administrator before assuming rollover eligibility.
Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS): TRS is the largest Texas public pension, covering public education employees across the DFW area and statewide. TRS is a defined-benefit plan. A member cannot roll the ongoing TRS annuity into any IRA. A partial lump-sum option (PLSO) exists for eligible members at retirement; that lump-sum portion may be eligible for rollover. Confirm your eligibility directly with TRS at trs.texas.gov.
Texas Municipal Retirement System (TMRS): TMRS covers participating city employees across DFW-area municipalities. TMRS is a defined-benefit plan. Upon separation, a member may request a refund of accumulated contributions, which can be rolled into an IRA. The ongoing retirement annuity cannot be rolled. Confirm your city’s participation and your plan terms at tmrs.com.
Texas County and District Retirement System (TCDRS): TCDRS covers county and district employees in many DFW-area jurisdictions. Like TMRS, TCDRS is a defined-benefit plan with a member-contribution refund available on separation. Verify rollover eligibility at tcdrs.org.
Defined-contribution plans (401(k), 403(b), 457(b), TSP): These accounts can generally be rolled into a gold IRA once you separate from your employer or reach age 59 1/2 while still employed. Former-employer 401(k) balances are typically the most straightforward rollover source. Federal employees and military personnel in the DFW area with Thrift Savings Plan (TSP) accounts follow standard federal rollover rules after separation from federal service.
Which metals qualify for a gold IRA
IRC Section 408(m) defines which metals can be held in an IRA without triggering the collectibles rule. The table below summarizes eligibility for the four approved metal types.
| Metal | Minimum fineness | Common IRA-eligible coins | Common exclusions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gold | .995 (99.5%) | American Gold Eagle* (.9167), American Gold Buffalo (.9999), Canadian Gold Maple Leaf (.9999) | South African Krugerrand (.9167, not a statutory exception); rare or numismatic coins bought for collectible value |
| Silver | .999 (99.9%) | American Silver Eagle (.999), Canadian Silver Maple Leaf (.9999) | Pre-1965 "junk" silver; Morgan and Peace dollars; generic rounds from unaccredited mints |
| Platinum | .9995 (99.95%) | American Platinum Eagle (.9995), Canadian Platinum Maple Leaf (.9995) | Coins below .9995 fineness; unaccredited bar sources |
| Palladium | .9995 (99.95%) | American Palladium Eagle (.9995), Canadian Palladium Maple Leaf (.9995) | Coins below .9995 fineness; unaccredited bar sources |
*The American Gold Eagle is 22-karat (.9167 fine gold) but qualifies by statutory exception under IRC 408(m)(3)(A)(i). Proof Eagles are eligible if in original U.S. Mint packaging with certificate of authenticity. Bars must come from a NYMEX/COMEX-approved or LBMA-accredited refiner. Your custodian verifies metal eligibility at the time of purchase. Generic silver rounds, foreign gold coins below the .995 threshold, and collectible or graded coins bought for numismatic value do not qualify and will be rejected. Home storage of any IRA-eligible metal is treated as a taxable distribution regardless of the metal’s fineness.
How to open a gold IRA from DFW
Opening a gold IRA from the Dallas-Fort Worth area follows the same five steps as any other U.S. location. The process is entirely remote. No physical visit to a local office is required or possible through Harry’s Coins.
- Confirm rollover eligibility. Identify your source account (401(k), traditional IRA, 403(b), TSP, or pension lump-sum) and confirm it qualifies. Use the rollover eligibility tool below or contact your plan administrator directly.
- Select an IRS-approved SDIRA custodian. The custodian holds the account, executes metal purchases on your direction, and coordinates with the depository. Verify IRS approval before opening. Augusta Precious Metals’ free checklist walks DFW-area residents through evaluating custodians for accounts of $50,000 or more.
- Open the SDIRA and fund it. A direct custodian-to-custodian transfer avoids the 60-day rollover clock and the 20 percent mandatory withholding that applies to indirect rollovers from employer plans. If you receive a distribution yourself, you have 60 calendar days to redeposit 100 percent of the gross amount or owe income tax plus a 10 percent early withdrawal penalty if you are under age 59 1/2.
- Choose IRA-approved metals. Instruct the custodian to purchase metals meeting IRC 408(m) fineness standards from an approved dealer. You do not take personal custody of the metal at any point.
- Metal is delivered to an IRS-approved depository. The custodian arranges shipment. Storage can be segregated (your specific coins and bars set aside) or commingled (a weight-based claim on a pooled inventory). Fee structures differ between the two options.
Can you roll your account into a gold IRA? Eligibility checker
Most retirement money can move into a gold IRA once it is an eligible rollover distribution. Pick your account and situation for a general answer. Always confirm the specifics with your plan administrator or custodian.
General guidance only, not tax or financial advice. Eligibility depends on your specific plan document and IRS rules; confirm with your plan administrator and a tax advisor. A direct trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids the 60-day rule and 20% withholding.

What a gold IRA costs
Gold IRA fees stack in layers. Each custodian and depository prices its services independently. The table below shows the typical cost components and ranges.
| Fee type | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Account setup (one-time) | $0 to $300 | Many custodians waive this in year one; confirm before opening |
| Annual custodian fee | $80 to $300/year | Usually a flat annual fee; some custodians charge a percentage of assets |
| Depository storage fee | $100 to $200/year or 0.10% to 0.15% of metal value | Flat or percentage varies by facility and storage type (segregated vs. commingled) |
| Dealer markup (spread) | 1% to 5% of purchase price | One-time cost at purchase; not a recurring annual fee |
| Liquidation or transaction fee | $0 to $50 per transaction | Applies when you sell metal inside the account |
Ranges based on published custodian fee schedules reviewed July 2026. Individual providers vary; always request a written fee schedule before opening an account.
At midpoint estimates ($200/year custodian, $150/year storage), fixed annual fees total $350, or 0.35 percent on a $100,000 account. The same $350 on a $250,000 account equals 0.14 percent. On a $30,000 account, that same stack is 1.17 percent, a materially higher drag on returns.
Texas gold IRA fee-drag calculator
Texas gold IRAs charge mostly flat dollar fees (setup, annual custodian, storage). Flat fees take a much bigger bite out of a small account than a large one. Enter your numbers to see the drag.
Estimate only. Fee amounts vary by provider and are often not published; enter figures you confirm in writing. This tool ignores metal price changes and the dealer spread, which also affect returns. Not financial advice.

Where DFW-area IRA metal can be stored
IRS rules require precious-metals IRA holdings to sit at an approved depository, not at your home or in a bank safe-deposit box. A 2021 Tax Court decision, McNulty v. Commissioner (157 T.C. No. 10), confirmed that storing IRA metals at home constitutes a taxable distribution. The IRS taxes the full fair market value as ordinary income and applies the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty for holders under age 59 1/2.
DFW-area holders have two categories of depository options:
National private depositories: IRS-approved facilities including Delaware Depository, Brink’s Global Services, International Depository Services (IDS), and CNT Depository serve IRA accounts nationally, including Texas residents. Your custodian arranges shipment. These facilities carry substantial insurance on stored metal and are routinely audited by third-party firms.
Texas Bullion Depository (Leander, TX): The state-run facility is approximately 190 to 200 miles from central DFW via I-35 W. Lone Star Tangible Assets operates it under IRS nonbank trustee approval. Not all SDIRA custodians currently coordinate with the Texas Bullion Depository for IRA storage. Verify current custodian-depository combinations and fee schedules directly at texasbulliondepository.gov before instructing your custodian.
Segregated storage holds your specific coins and bars separately from other clients’ metal. Commingled (or allocated) storage records your holdings as a weight-based claim against a shared pool. Segregated storage typically costs more but gives clearer identification of your exact coins and bars. Both types are IRS-compliant when held at an approved facility.

When a gold IRA is not the right move
A gold IRA does not fit every situation. Here are the cases where it typically does not make sense.
Account balance under $50,000. Fixed annual fees (custodian plus storage) become a large percentage of a small balance. On a $30,000 account, a $350/year fee stack is roughly 1.2 percent annually before dealer markups. That ratio erodes returns relative to low-cost index funds in a standard IRA.
You need access to the funds within five years. Selling metal inside a gold IRA takes time and involves dealer spreads and transaction fees. A gold IRA is not a liquid vehicle. Planned withdrawal timelines under five years are generally a poor match.
You are already near or past RMD age with a large account. Required minimum distributions from a gold IRA are calculated on the year-end fair market value of the metal. If the account holds large-denomination bars, meeting the RMD without selling metal can be difficult to calibrate. Plan this well before age 73.
You inherited the IRA and are subject to the 10-year rule. Beneficiaries of traditional IRAs under SECURE 2.0 must generally empty the account within 10 years. Holding physical metal through a depository during a mandatory 10-year drawdown adds fees and logistical complexity to each required distribution.
You prefer simplicity over physical custody. A gold ETF or gold-focused mutual fund inside a standard IRA provides exposure to gold without custodian changes, depository fees, or dealer spreads on every purchase. The tradeoff is that ETF holdings are paper claims on gold, not physical metal stored directly in your name.
Frequently asked questions
Does living in DFW affect which gold IRA custodian I can use?
No. Any IRS-approved self-directed IRA custodian operating nationally is open to Texas residents. Your county of residence does not restrict custodian choices. The entire process is remote.
Does Texas tax gold IRA withdrawals?
Texas levies no state personal income tax. Gold IRA withdrawals taken by Texas residents, including required minimum distributions and early distributions, are taxed at the federal level only. No Texas state tax return covers personal IRA income.
Can I roll my Dallas Police and Fire Pension into a gold IRA?
The ongoing monthly annuity from a defined-benefit plan like the DPFP cannot be rolled into any IRA. What may be eligible is a lump-sum refund of your own member contributions upon separation, if your specific plan tier allows it. Confirm the terms directly with the DPFP before assuming any rollover is available.
How far is the Texas Bullion Depository from DFW?
The Texas Bullion Depository is in Leander, north of Austin. It is approximately 190 to 200 miles from central Dallas and Fort Worth via I-35 W. IRA storage is available through Lone Star Tangible Assets when paired with a participating custodian. Verify current custodian-depository arrangements at texasbulliondepository.gov.
What precious metals besides gold can a DFW resident hold in a gold IRA?
Silver at .999 fineness or better, platinum at .9995 fineness or better, and palladium at .9995 fineness or better are all IRS-eligible under IRC Section 408(m)(3). Common eligible products include the American Silver Eagle, the Canadian Maple Leaf series in each metal, and bars from LBMA or NYMEX-accredited refiners.
What is the minimum to open a gold IRA at Augusta?
Augusta Precious Metals requires a minimum of $50,000 in eligible assets for new gold IRA accounts. Accounts under $50,000 generally do not qualify. Augusta is suited for DFW-area residents with at least $50,000 in a 401(k) from a former employer, traditional IRA, 403(b), 457(b), or TSP account.
How long does a gold IRA rollover take from DFW?
A direct custodian-to-custodian IRA transfer typically settles in 3 to 10 business days. Employer-plan rollovers (401(k), 403(b), TSP) can take 2 to 4 weeks depending on the plan administrator. The full process from initial inquiry to a funded account is generally 2 to 4 weeks.
Can I take physical delivery of my gold IRA metal?
Yes, but delivery is treated as a taxable distribution at the metal’s fair market value on that date. If you are under age 59 1/2, the 10 percent early withdrawal penalty also applies on top of ordinary income tax. Some retirees past age 59 1/2 choose an in-kind distribution rather than selling the metal first. Consult a tax advisor before requesting physical delivery.
