This review is written for a national reader weighing Birch Gold Group as the dealer behind a self-directed precious metals IRA, with a specific section for Texas residents further down. Every company fact below is verified against Birch's own public pages, the Better Business Bureau reference on those pages, or the SEC EDGAR full-text search index, and attributed line by line. Any figure Birch does not publish is called out plainly rather than invented.
One disclosure up front, stated in plain language. Augusta Precious Metals is the single dealer we hold an affiliate relationship with, so we may earn a commission when a reader opens an account through the Augusta links on this page. We do not earn from Birch. That relationship shapes our recommendation as an end step, not the facts we report about Birch.
Who Birch Gold Group is
Birch Gold Group, Inc. has traded under that name since 2011 (source: birchgold.com and the About page schema at birchgold.com/the-birch-difference/, checked July 2026). The company sells physical gold, silver, platinum, and palladium for personal purchase and for self-directed precious metals IRAs.
The stated corporate address is 309 Court Avenue, Suite 809, Des Moines, IA 50309. This is a headquarters office rather than a walk-in retail store, and Birch itself notes on its footer that payments should not be mailed to that address. Buyers deal with Birch by phone at (800) 355-2116 or through the company website.
Birch's public story credits its team with backgrounds at Citigroup, Dun and Bradstreet, and IBM, and states that the company has helped more than 40,000 customers since 2011 (source: birchgold.com, checked July 2026). The 40,000 figure is Birch's own claim and we could not corroborate it against an independent database.
What Birch offers and how the process works
Birch's core product is a Precious Metals IRA: a self-directed individual retirement account holding IRS-approved gold, silver, platinum, or palladium. A separate licensed custodian holds the account under IRC 408(a)(2), and an approved depository stores the metal. Birch is the dealer, not the custodian.
The company also sells coins and bars for personal, non-IRA purchase. It advertises a buyback offer for existing customers where a Birch Specialist provides an up-to-date buy-back quote at any time (source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/, checked July 2026). The buyback is a stated policy, not a written price guarantee.
The main custodian pairing Birch mentions on its own site is Equity Trust Company. If a customer prefers a different self-directed IRA trustee, the choice is available under federal law, but the Birch process is built around Equity Trust as the default. Confirm this pairing during the initial call.
Every Birch customer is assigned a Precious Metals Specialist who handles rollover paperwork, metal selection, and coordination with the custodian and depository. Birch does not publicly state whether these Specialists are paid on commission, salary, or a mix. Ask directly before you sign, because the answer changes the incentive on higher-margin coin recommendations.
The fee schedule Birch actually publishes
This is the section where Birch is unusually specific for the industry. Most gold IRA dealers refuse to publish a dollar figure. Birch publishes four on its own IRA page, and the total is a flat annual number rather than a percentage of assets.

| Fee line | Amount | When it applies |
|---|---|---|
| Account setup fee | $50 | One-time, at account opening. |
| Wire transfer fee | $30 | One-time, on the incoming rollover wire. |
| Annual storage and insurance | $110 | Billed once per year by the depository through the custodian. |
| Annual management fee | $125 | Billed once per year by the IRA custodian. |
| Combined annual recurring | $235 flat | Regardless of account size, per Birch's own statement. |
| Waiver on transfers over $50,000 | First year fees paid by Birch | Applies to qualifying rollovers only, per Birch. |
Source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/, verified July 2026. Confirm current amounts directly with your Specialist before you sign.
Two nuances the fee page states in plain text. First, the $235 is flat and does not scale as a percentage of the account. On a $50,000 IRA that is roughly 0.47 percent per year. On a $250,000 IRA the same $235 is closer to 0.09 percent per year. Flat pricing favors larger balances.
Second, Birch offers to pay the first year of fees on incoming rollover transfers above $50,000, which effectively waives $235 in year one. That waiver is a promotional line and can be revised. Get it in writing on the account application, not just verbally.
The one cost Birch does not publish, and no dealer does clearly, is the dealer spread on the metal itself. The spread is the gap between the price you pay when you buy and the same-day price the dealer will pay when you sell. For most gold IRAs the spread is the largest lifetime cost. Ask Birch for a written buy and sell quote on the specific coins you plan to purchase.
The $5,000 minimum and the $50,000 waiver line
Birch's stated initial purchase minimum is $5,000. This is at the low end for the industry and is quoted directly on the Precious Metals IRA page (source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/, checked July 2026). Below $5,000 the account is not opened.
Two thresholds matter for the pricing math. A $5,000 opening purchase and the flat $235 annual fee together mean recurring fees run at roughly 4.7 percent per year of assets, before any dealer spread. That is fee drag no metal price move can offset over a long horizon.
At the $50,000 line, the first-year waiver kicks in and the ongoing $235 becomes roughly 0.47 percent per year. This is the account size where Birch's flat pricing starts to look competitive against percentage-based custodians. Above $100,000 the percentage falls further.
If your eligible rollover is under $10,000, the honest answer is that neither Birch nor most gold IRA dealers is a strong fit. A smaller balance is better matched to a discount broker IRA holding gold ETFs, or to buying physical gold outside an IRA where the flat fee is not in the way.
Depository options, including two Texas vaults
Birch lists five approved storage venues on its Precious Metals IRA page. This variety is larger than the industry norm and is one of the harder features to fake, because each depository has its own public URL and inventory.
| Depository | Location | Ownership | Notable feature per Birch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Delaware Depository Service Company (DDSC) | Wilmington, DE | Private | Largest precious metals depository outside New York; metal insured up to $1 billion by Lloyd's of London. |
| Brink's Global Services | New York, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City | Private, part of The Brink's Company | Largest non-bank, non-government holder of precious metals in the world. |
| International Depository Services (IDS) | Delaware and other locations | Private | Independent depository network used by several self-directed custodians. |
| Texas Precious Metals Depository (TPMD) | Shiner, TX | Private | Privately owned Texas facility; distinct from the state-owned depository. |
| Texas Bullion Depository (TxBD) | Leander, TX | State of Texas, day-to-day operated by Lone Star Tangible Assets | Only state-administered precious metals depository in the United States. |
Source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/ and the Birch page dedicated to the Texas Bullion Depository. Checked July 2026.
Storage fees vary by vault, whether the metal sits in a commingled account or a segregated space, and whether you hold silver plus gold or gold only. The $110 line quoted above is Birch's default figure; a segregated Texas Bullion Depository account may run higher and quarterly billing applies at TxBD (source: birchgold.com Texas Bullion Depository page).
Ask Birch which specific depository is quoted in your fee estimate. The $235 flat number in the Birch fee schedule assumes the default pairing. A different depository can shift the storage line up or down.
How Birch Gold Group serves Texas investors
This is the section that matters most for a Harry's Coins reader in Texas, because the state has two features that shape any precious metals IRA decision. Both are real, and Birch supports both directly.
Texas has no state personal income tax. Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution prohibits one without a statewide referendum. Any taxable distribution from a gold IRA, whether an early withdrawal, a Roth conversion, or a required minimum distribution at age 73 or 75, is taxed by the IRS only. There is no Texas state income tax stacked on top. Consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
Texas also runs the only state-administered precious metals depository in the country. The Texas Bullion Depository was authorized by House Bill 483, signed by Governor Greg Abbott on June 12, 2015. It opened operations in 2018 under the Texas Comptroller of Public Accounts.
The vault sits on a 10-acre campus in Leander, north of Austin. Day-to-day operations are run by Lone Star Tangible Assets under contract with the state (source: texasbulliondepository.gov and Birch Gold's own TxBD page, checked July 2026).
Birch Gold Group is an approved dealer for the Texas Bullion Depository storage program. Birch's own page states that the depository works with Equity Trust Company. That is the same self-directed IRA custodian Birch pairs with by default. So a Birch IRA can hold metal at the state-owned vault without leaving Equity Trust (source: birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/storage/texas-bullion-depository/, checked July 2026).
For a Texas resident, this is the differentiator worth asking about on the first call. Not every national gold IRA dealer supports TxBD. Birch does. If you want your IRA metal stored inside Texas under state supervision, ask specifically for TxBD storage in your fee estimate, not just "Texas" storage. The privately owned Texas Precious Metals Depository in Shiner is a separate facility and a separate quote.
Birch does not appear to maintain a physical Texas office. Customer service runs from the Iowa headquarters. If you need in-person service, plan on either a phone-based relationship with a Specialist or a trip to visit the depository in Leander directly, which TxBD allows by appointment.
Verified public record and regulatory footprint
Trust signals a cautious buyer weighs are public, and we list only what we could confirm or attribute. Each line names the source we relied on.
- BBB rating: A+ per Birch Gold Group's own site and its BBB profile at bbb.org/us/ia/des-moines/profile/precious-metal-dealers/birch-gold-group-0664-32155 (source: birchgold.com/the-birch-difference/ and complaints-record page, checked July 2026). The live BBB profile returns a challenge page from our server, so verify the current rating and complaint volume yourself before you sign.
- Business Consumer Alliance: Birch cites a favorable BCA record on its own complaints page. The BCA is the former Better Business Bureau of the Southland, founded in 1936.
- SEC EDGAR filings: the SEC full-text search index returns zero hits for the exact phrase "Birch Gold Group" (source: efts.sec.gov, checked July 2026). This does not rule out state-level actions, but it means no federal securities filing or enforcement text mentions the company by name.
- Legal actions: "No reports of any legal actions against this company" per Birch's own complaints-record page. This is the company's statement, not an independent court check.
- Government actions: "No reports of any government actions against this company" per Birch's own complaints-record page. Verify with your state's securities regulator if that record matters for your decision.
- Consumer reviews: Birch's page reproduces first-name testimonials from customers. Testimonials on a company page are marketing copy. If review depth matters to you, cross-check TrustPilot and ConsumerAffairs before you decide.
- Custodian pairing: Equity Trust Company is the self-directed IRA trustee Birch names on its own site. Equity Trust is a state-chartered trust company regulated in South Dakota.
A note on the BBB record, because it is the signal this audience weighs most. Our fetch of the live BBB profile URL returned a 403 challenge, so the A+ rating we cite is confirmed against Birch's own page and the profile ID it links to. Any specific customer star average, complaint count, or accreditation date you want to rely on should be confirmed on the live BBB profile yourself.
How to open a Birch Gold precious metals IRA
The Birch process follows a common structure for a self-directed metals IRA, with the Birch Specialist coordinating the moving parts. A direct rollover from your existing plan is the route that avoids the 60-day rule and the 20 percent federal withholding.
- Request the free info kit and speak with a Specialist. Start with the Birch educational kit and a call with an assigned Precious Metals Specialist. Confirm the current fee schedule, the minimum, and whether any waiver applies to your rollover size.
- Confirm your funds are rollover-eligible. Most traditional IRA, 401(k), 403(b), 457(b), and TSP balances qualify after separation from service. A defined-benefit pension in payment status generally does not. Check before you start.
- Open a self-directed IRA with the paired custodian. The default pairing is Equity Trust Company. Sign the custodian application, name a beneficiary, and confirm the depository selection in writing.
- Request a direct rollover from your existing plan. Your former plan wires funds custodian to custodian. A direct rollover avoids the 20 percent federal withholding and the 60-day redeposit clock that an in-hand check triggers.
- Fund the account and place the metal order. With cash in the IRA, sign a buy direction telling the custodian which IRS-approved metals to purchase from Birch. The custodian pays Birch out of IRA cash.
- Confirm depository placement. Birch ships the metal direct to the chosen approved depository, which posts the metal to your IRA. Home storage of IRA metal is treated as a full distribution and is not allowed. See the 2021 US Tax Court ruling in McNulty v. Commissioner for the reasoning.
- Get the fee schedule and buy quote in writing. Before you sign anything binding, keep a written record of the setup fee, wire fee, annual storage, annual management, waiver terms, and the buy quote on each coin. This is what protects you if a Specialist changes.
Worked example: a $75,000 Texas rollover
Balanced pros and cons
Where Birch is genuinely strong
- Publishes a specific dollar fee schedule, which most dealers refuse to do.
- Flat $235 annual fee rather than a percentage of assets, which favors larger balances.
- Supports the state-owned Texas Bullion Depository as an approved storage venue, not just the private options.
- Low $5,000 initial purchase minimum opens the account to smaller rollovers than industry norms.
- $50,000 rollover waiver covers all first-year fees per Birch's stated promotion.
- Established under the Birch name since 2011, with an Iowa corporate address on file.
Where a cautious buyer pushes back
- The 40,000-customer figure is Birch's own claim and we could not corroborate it against an independent database.
- Birch does not publicly disclose the dealer spread on any coin, which is the largest cost most gold IRA buyers pay.
- The default custodian pairing is Equity Trust Company, so custodian-level fee changes flow through to you and are not fully in Birch's control.
- Testimonials on the Birch complaints page are first-name marketing; independent BBB and TrustPilot data need to be checked separately.
- The Specialist compensation model (salary, commission, or mix) is not disclosed publicly.
- No published in-person office for customer service outside the Iowa corporate address.
Verdict: who Birch fits, who it does not
Birch Gold Group fits a specific buyer well. You are moving $50,000 or more from an eligible IRA, 401(k), 403(b), or TSP into a precious metals IRA. You want a flat fee, a written schedule, and you can name Texas Bullion Depository as your storage venue. In that profile, Birch's published pricing and TxBD support are real advantages over dealers that refuse to publish either.
Birch is not a strong fit for the reader with a small balance chasing a low minimum, because the $235 flat fee dominates below $10,000. It is also not a strong fit for the buyer who wants a documented salaried-educator sales model, because Birch does not publicly commit to one.
Before you sign with Birch, we recommend one comparison. Augusta Precious Metals is our affiliate partner and publishes an education-first Learn-Talk-Decide process with a written company checklist. Augusta's own account minimum is industry-reported around $50,000, so the comparison is most useful when your rollover is in that range or larger.
When a gold IRA is the wrong move
A precious metals IRA is a specialty product. Even when the dealer is reputable and the fee schedule is clean, the wrapper does not fit every saver. The list below names the situations where Birch, Augusta, or any other gold IRA dealer is the wrong tool.
Small balance. A $5,000 IRA carrying $235 in flat annual fees pays roughly 4.7 percent per year of assets before any dealer spread. Fee drag at that ratio erodes any realistic long-term result.
Short holding horizon. If you expect to sell back to the dealer within three to five years, the round-trip spread on the metal plus the setup fee combine into a high effective cost that a longer holding period would amortize.
You want physical possession at home. IRS rules do not allow home storage of IRA metal. If holding coins at home matters more than the tax wrapper, buy physical gold directly outside an IRA. The 2021 McNulty case confirmed the tax cost of the alternative.
Your funds are not rollover-eligible. A pension in payment status, an active-employee 401(k) below the in-service rollover age, or a Texas Employees Retirement System pension are not eligible funds. Confirm eligibility with your plan administrator before you engage any dealer.
You need liquidity within twelve months. A precious metals IRA can be sold back to the dealer, but the bid-ask spread means the exit costs money. If you need the cash inside a year, the wrapper is the wrong choice.
You want a diversified paper portfolio. If you have decided to add gold exposure to an otherwise diversified portfolio, a standard brokerage IRA holding a gold ETF is far cheaper than any physical metals IRA. The physical-metal path only makes sense when direct ownership of the coin or bar is the point.
Frequently asked questions
Is Birch Gold Group a legitimate business?
Yes. Birch Gold Group has operated under that name since 2011, is registered in Iowa, and publishes a BBB profile at bbb.org linked to a Des Moines address. SEC EDGAR full-text search shows zero filings mentioning the exact name (efts.sec.gov, checked July 2026). Confirm the current BBB status yourself before signing.
What is the Birch Gold minimum to open an IRA?
The stated initial purchase minimum is $5,000 per Birch's own IRA page (birchgold.com/precious-metals-ira/, checked July 2026). Below that amount the account is not opened. Above $50,000, Birch offers to pay the customer's first year of fees per its posted promotion.
What does Birch Gold actually charge each year?
Birch publishes a flat $235 annual recurring cost, made up of $110 for storage and insurance plus $125 for management. One-time charges are $50 for account setup and $30 for the incoming wire. The dealer spread on the metal is separate and is not published.
Can Birch Gold store my IRA metal in Texas?
Yes. Birch supports both Texas storage venues: the state-owned Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, and the privately owned Texas Precious Metals Depository in Shiner. Ask specifically for TxBD storage in your written quote if you want the state-administered vault. Birch's own page on TxBD confirms the arrangement, with Equity Trust Company as the paired custodian.
Who holds the actual IRA account?
The custodian, not Birch. Birch is the precious metals dealer. The IRA is held by a self-directed IRA custodian, typically Equity Trust Company under the default Birch pairing. Under IRC 408(a)(2), only a bank, credit union, state-chartered trust company, or IRS-approved non-bank trustee can hold an IRA.
Does Birch Gold Group have a physical office in Texas?
Not per its own public materials. The corporate address is 309 Court Avenue, Suite 809, Des Moines, IA 50309. Texas residents interact by phone at (800) 355-2116 or through the Birch website. If you want to see your metal in person, the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander allows appointment-based visits.
Are Birch Gold Specialists paid on commission?
Birch does not publicly disclose whether Specialists are salaried, commissioned, or paid on a mix. Ask directly during the first call. The answer changes the incentive around higher-margin coin selection, which is where most gold IRA complaints originate industry-wide.
How does Birch Gold compare to Augusta Precious Metals?
Augusta Precious Metals is the dealer we hold an affiliate relationship with, so we may earn a commission from Augusta and none from Birch. Augusta publishes an education-first Learn-Talk-Decide process and states a salaried, non-commissioned educator model. Its industry-reported account minimum is around $50,000. Run both intake calls and compare the written fee schedules before you decide.
Does Birch Gold accept a TSP or 403(b) rollover?
Yes, per its own IRA page. A Thrift Savings Plan balance is eligible after separation from federal service, and a 403(b) balance is eligible under the same in-service or post-separation rules that apply to a 401(k). Confirm your plan's specific eligibility with the plan administrator.
What happens to my metal if Birch Gold goes out of business?
The metal sits at the depository, and the IRA is held by the separate custodian, so a dealer insolvency does not touch the account itself. You would place future orders through a different dealer. The IRS-required segregation at the custodian and depository level is designed for exactly this case.
