About Harry’s Coins
Affiliate disclosure: we may earn a commission when a reader opens an account through certain links on the site. The commission has no effect on what you pay or on what we publish. We are not a financial or tax advisor. Last reviewed July 2026.
Our mission
Retirement dollars are the most consequential dollars most people ever move. Precious-metals IRAs sit in a corner of the retirement market where marketing volume is high, source quality is uneven, and rules are misquoted often. Harry’s Coins exists to close that gap for Texas readers who want clear, sourced answers before they sign anything.
Our target reader is a 55-to-75 year old Texan with a meaningful retirement balance who is asking a specific question: does a gold IRA make sense for me, and if so, who do I trust to open one. We write for that reader.
What we do
Coverage areas
- Federal IRA rules: contribution limits, RMD age, direct vs indirect rollover, the 60-day clock, the collectibles exception under IRC 408(m)(3).
- Texas-specific rules and options: the no-state-income-tax angle, the Texas Bullion Depository in Leander, and the interaction with major Texas public-pension systems (TRS, ERS, TMRS, TCDRS, city plans).
- Custodians and depositories: what each does, how to compare fees, how to vet a self-directed IRA custodian for a precious-metals account.
- Company reviews: fees, minimums, dealer markup pattern, complaint history, regulatory footprint, applied with the same criteria across every provider.
- Risk and red-flag coverage: numismatic upsells, premium coin gouging, high-pressure tactics, and the situations where a gold IRA is the wrong tool.
What we are not
Harry’s Coins is not:
- A gold or silver dealer. We do not sell coins, bars, or any physical metal.
- A jewelry shop. We do not sell or appraise jewelry.
- A self-directed IRA custodian or non-bank trustee. We do not hold accounts.
- An IRS-approved depository. We do not store metal.
- A financial, tax, or legal advisor. We do not provide personalised advice. Every reader should consult a licensed advisor for their situation.
- A broker-dealer, investment adviser, or Registered Investment Adviser. We do not sell securities and do not manage assets.
How we work
Source priority
- Federal law and IRS guidance. IRS Publication 590-A, Publication 590-B, Topic 413, Topic 558, the Internal Revenue Code (especially Section 408(m)), and IRS Notice releases for annual limits.
- Texas primary sources. Texas Constitution (Article 8, Section 24 for state income tax), Texas Comptroller publications, Texas Bullion Depository official pages (texasbulliondepository.gov), and pension-plan primary documents (trs.texas.gov, ers.texas.gov, tmrs.com, tcdrs.org, and individual city plans).
- Regulators. FINRA investor alerts, SEC investor.gov guidance, Commodity Futures Trading Commission press releases, and state securities boards.
- Consumer records. Better Business Bureau profiles for company reviews, Trustpilot, and state attorney general enforcement actions where relevant.
- Company-issued documents. Each provider’s own fee schedule, disclosure documents, and IRA agreements.
Editorial standards
Our writing rules
- Answer-first structure. Every page opens with a plain-language answer.
- No market predictions. We do not forecast gold prices, silver prices, or any market direction.
- Raw numbers before percentages. A 20 percent withholding number appears with the dollar amount whenever possible.
- Politically neutral. We write for readers across the political spectrum.
- Every time-sensitive fact carries a "checked Month Year" tag and is re-verified against the primary source.
- Every page carries a byline and a last-reviewed date.
How we make money
Harry’s Coins is affiliate-supported. Our primary affiliate partner is Augusta Precious Metals. When a reader opens an account with Augusta through a link on the site, we may receive a commission at no cost to the reader.
Affiliate revenue does not change the price a reader pays and does not change what we publish. Our company-review criteria are the same for every provider, and reviews of non-affiliate companies contain no affiliate link and no outbound link to the reviewed company.
See the affiliate disclosure page for the full policy, including how commissions are structured and the Federal Trade Commission guidance we follow.
Editorial independence and conflicts
Harry’s Coins does not accept paid placement inside company reviews. A provider cannot pay for a higher ranking, softer language, or a positive verdict. Our review criteria are published on the reviews themselves, and each review answers the same set of questions in the same order.
A page tier system governs affiliate placement across the site. Educational, cautionary, and competitor-review pages carry no affiliate call-to-action. Pages that recommend a specific action (a rollover guide, for example) may include an affiliate link, marked as sponsored, in one clearly identified block.
Corrections
Any factual error we publish is corrected on the page, with the correction noted in the page footer. Readers who spot an error, a stale figure, or a source we missed can reach us through the contact page. We aim to respond within five business days.
Who writes for Harry’s Coins
Articles are written by the Harry’s Coins Editorial team, working from the source-priority policy above. The team combines retirement-account research with Texas-specific reporting on state-run programs and public pensions. Every article names its editorial owner at the bottom of the page and carries a last-reviewed date. Where relevant, we cite the primary source directly rather than paraphrase.
Frequently asked questions
Is Harry’s Coins a coin dealer?
No. We are an editorial site. We do not sell any coins, bars, or physical metal.
Are you a Registered Investment Adviser (RIA)?
No. We are not a Registered Investment Adviser and we do not provide personalised investment advice. We publish general educational material about the rules and mechanics of precious-metals IRAs. For decisions specific to your situation, consult a licensed advisor.
Do you accept payment from companies to review them?
No. We do not accept payment for a review, a placement, a specific verdict, or softer language. Our only revenue is affiliate commission from a small number of programs we participate in, disclosed on every page that carries an affiliate link and in full on the affiliate disclosure.
Why Texas specifically?
Texas has genuine tax and infrastructure advantages that are misunderstood elsewhere. No state personal income tax under Article 8, Section 24 of the Texas Constitution. A state-run bullion depository (the only one of its kind in the United States) that added IRA-storage capability in 2023. Large public-pension systems (TRS, ERS, TMRS, TCDRS) with rollover rules Texans need to understand before separating from service.
Who owns Harry’s Coins?
Harry’s Coins is an independent digital publisher. Ownership and operation are separate from any gold IRA dealer, custodian, or depository referenced on the site. If we cover a company we have a business relationship with, that relationship is disclosed on the page.
Can I trust a gold IRA article that carries an affiliate link?
You should verify the underlying facts against the primary sources we cite. That is the entire point of the source-priority policy: to make our claims independently checkable. Every page cites IRS publications, statutes, or company-issued documents by name so a reader can go directly to the source. An affiliate link does not change whether a claim is accurate; the citation does.
