The 1916-D at a glance
The 1916-D Mercury dime is the single most important date in the entire Winged Liberty Head series. Only 264,000 pieces were struck as business coins at the Denver Mint in 1916, the lowest business-strike mintage of any regular-issue Mercury dime across the full 1916 to 1945 run.
Adolph Weinman's new design entered production at Philadelphia in late October 1916. Denver received working dies later that year, but a large Treasury order for quarters diverted the branch mint from dime production almost immediately. Only 264,000 dimes came out of Denver before the year closed.
Every collector who assembles a Mercury dime date-and-mint set eventually confronts the same question: how to source a genuine 1916-D. That single coin gates the completion of the entire set. Demand has stayed strong for more than a century, and prices on original examples have moved in one direction over the long run.
Why so few were struck at Denver
The Mercury dime was rushed into production in the fall of 1916. Acting Mint Director Robert W. Woolley resigned in August, and his successor F. J. H. von Engelken took over as the design cleared review. Production at the Philadelphia Mint began on August 30, 1916.
Denver and San Francisco received their dies later in the year. In November 1916, Von Engelken informed the three mint superintendents of a large Treasury order for quarter dollars. He instructed the Denver Mint to strike only quarters until that order was filled, halting further dime production at that branch.
Striking of dimes at Denver did not resume until well into 1917. The total 1916-D dime output for the year was 264,000 pieces. That figure compares to 22.2 million dimes struck at Philadelphia and 10.4 million at San Francisco in the same year.

Where the D mint mark sits
The mint mark is the single most valuable letter on the coin. On a Mercury dime the mint mark, when present, sits on the reverse. It appears at the base of the olive branch, immediately to the left of the fasces base from the viewer's perspective, below and to the right of the ONE in ONE DIME.
A D in that position, on a coin dated 1916, is the D you are looking for. A missing mark means the coin was struck at Philadelphia and is a common date worth a small premium over silver melt. An S in that position means San Francisco, which is also a common 1916 issue.
The genuine D mint mark on a 1916-D has a specific shape, size, and spacing that trained graders recognize on sight. Counterfeit D marks added to genuine 1916 Philadelphia dimes almost always deviate in at least one of those three attributes. That combination is why every 1916-D sold at a serious price should be certified by an independent grading service first.
How grade changes the price by tier
Condition is the largest lever on any 1916-D valuation, and the lever is unusually steep for a twentieth-century coin. Circulated grades cover a wide spread. Mint-state examples occupy a much higher tier. Full Bands mint-state examples occupy a tier of their own.

Full Bands: the strike designation that changes everything
Full Bands, abbreviated FB by NGC and PCGS, is a strike designation applied to Mercury dimes that show complete separation of the two horizontal bands wrapping the fasces on the reverse. It is the single most consequential quality attribute on this series, and it matters more on the 1916-D than on almost any other date.
Weinman's reverse design placed a bound fasces at the center of the coin. Leather straps wrap the bundle horizontally at two points, one above center and one below. On a fully struck coin each band shows two parallel raised lines separated by a clean recess. On a weakly struck coin the bands merge into a single flat surface.
Denver's dies in 1916 tended to strike softer than the Philadelphia dies of the same year. Full Bands 1916-D specimens are correspondingly scarce even among the small population of surviving uncirculated coins. The population reports at PCGS and NGC show a small fraction of certified mint-state 1916-D coins carry the FB designation.

The added-D counterfeit problem
The 1916-D sits among the most counterfeited United States coins of the twentieth century. The reason is simple and economic. The 1916 Philadelphia dime is common, cheap to source, and identical in every attribute except the missing mint mark. Adding a fabricated D to that coin creates a piece that looks correct at first glance and carries a real silver body of the correct weight.
The classic attack is exactly that. A bad actor sources a genuine 1916 Philadelphia Mercury dime, which carries no mint mark, and adds a fabricated D to the reverse in the correct position at the base of the olive branch. The steps below are the sequence a serious hobbyist runs on any coin claimed to be a 1916-D. Follow them in order before treating the coin as anything more than a common silver dime.
- Confirm the coin is a Mercury dime. The obverse shows Liberty facing left wearing a winged Phrygian cap. The reverse shows a bound fasces flanked by an olive branch. Barber dimes struck through 1916, and Roosevelt dimes struck from 1946 forward, look different and are not part of this series.
- Read the date at the base of the obverse. The date must read 1916 clearly. If any digit is soft, tooled, or shows disturbed metal around it, treat the coin as suspect.
